Subject: Re: Coal Miners
Marybeth, this is a natural progression. The mines in Dick Johnson
township played out in early 1900s and new mines opened over in
Vermillion County 1905-10 and thousands moved over there. It was a big
migration. I have traced relatives through this migration. It takes lots
of effort to pour through the 1910 or 1920 census of Vermillion county to
find people.
Don't know exactly what you expect to find in additional info. Most of
these miners did not own property as they live in company temp housing or
rented. So census WPA indexes and newpaper obits are about it.
There were literally hunderds of mines in this area.
I have never found any employment data from these mines. Clinton library
has good materials if you are in the area.
