Norma Ooley Herman
: Murphy of Indiana
I have a court case of 1858 Owen Co, IN. in which John and Hugh Murphy
were
>sentenced to prison for manslaughter. They began serving their sentences
of
>10 yrs. in Dec 1858. I received copies of their admittance to
prison and
>their release, but haven't been able to find out what the charge for
>manslaughter was about. Hugh names his brother Perry on his prison record
and John's record says he's marr with 1 child and also names John's father
as William Murphy.
Hugh Murphy b.1830 was the s/o Thomas Murphy, and John Murphy b. abt
1834-39
was the s/o William Murphy. I think Thomas & William Murphy
were
brother-in-laws although unproven. I assume the manslaughter crime that
Hugh
and John Murphy were sent to prison for was the same crime-- but
I've not
been able to find anything on what the actual crime was about. Both men
were
sentenced from Owen Co, IN to 10yrs of prison. I have their prison
records--
but it only says sentenced for manslaughter. John's father
William Murphy
lived in Putnam Co/1850 census-- and in Clay Co on the 1860 census-- 1870
Morgan-- 1880 Owen Co, IN.
Thomas Murphy was listed on the 1840 & 1860 Putnam Co cen - 1870 Owen Co
cen
where he died after 1880 census. Thomas had also lived in Morgan Co
at one
time and some of the family lived in Monroe Co, IN at one time or another.
Thomas Murphy and his sons are missing on the 1850 census. The trial may
have only taken place in Owen Co-- and the actual crime committed somewhere
else; as you can see the Murphy families moved around alot. Owen Co has no
records on the trial only the fact that they were sent to prison from
there.
I welcome any ideas. Thomas was my gr gr gr grdfather. Can anyone
help
with this?
Thanks, K Hembree
