Sorry guys for the sloppy post! Thanks for helping me out. Here's the
correct(?) info I have:
William McKinley Harper b. 23 Aug. 1894 Brazil, Clay Co. Parents Walter
Harper and Mary Elliott.
Died 26 Sept. 1955, Chicago, IL.

Hello Joy,
You didn't list what your husband's grandfather's name was in your query.
That would help others to assist you. If you repost your query to the
list,
be sure to list you query with something like the person's name /
family
name, or a description relating to your query. Many people scan for a
subject they are searching, and never read "generic" subjects if it isn't
what they're searching.
I checked
www.ancestry.com for Walter Harper. It came up with the
following
marriage info for Walter and Mary.
Clay County, Indiana
Index to Marriage Record 1860 - 1920 Inclusive Volume I Letters A to H
Inclusive
Original Record Located in County Clerk's Office Brazil W. P. A.
Compiled
by Indiana Works Progress Administration 1940
County: Clay
Name: Mary Elliott
Spouse: Walter Harper
Marriage Date: 20 Dec 1898
Book: 10
Original Source Page: 218
---
With the marriage date listed as 1898, I would question the grandfather's
birth date again.
Ancestry.com also listed from the Clay Co birth index,
a
daughter born to Walter and Mary in 1901, but no first name was
listed on
the web site.
Here are some suggestions for you:
1. Did the grandfather live to collect social security and is he now
deceased? You might be able to check for him in the social security death
index(SSDI) - often it will list a birth date for the individual. You
might
want to check for him in adjacent counties, ie. Vigo, Putnam, Owen,
Parke,
etc. - to see if he might be listed in a birth index for those areas.
2. If you can get results from the SSDI that match, for a fee ($27 ?),
you can send to the Soc. Sec. agency to request a copy of his soc.
security
number application. If you get a copy of that application, it should
give
his parents names.
3. If you're really sure that the date is correct, you might try the Ind
State Dept of Health for a Birth Certificate. Even though births were
supposed to be registered in 1894, compliance was slack and not always
accurate. He might have filed to have a delayed certificate of birth or
correction issued in order to collect social security.
4. Have you tried other census years for him - 1910, 1920, 1930? That
might
help you tie down the parents / birth date better, if you think the
area
is
correct.

Subject: [INCLAY] New to list
Hello,
My name is Joy Smith. I'm researching the HARPER family reported to be in
Clay Co. My husbands Grandfather was reported to be born in Brazil, 23
Aug. 1894. I can't find a record of it. The courthouse says no record on
file. His parents are Walter Harper and Mary(Elizabeth)Elliott. I
couldn't find them in the 1900 census. But...I think I found them listed
in the 1921 directory.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Joy
