Well Dawn, let me add to your confusion. If you haven't already seen it,
the 1900 Census for Clay County, Brazil, shows them this way:
Sht 9b, ED1, 13 June 1900, 179/181:
Love, Emery Hd Mar 1865-35 Md 15 yrs
VA VA VA Coal miner
Lou Wife Oct 1866-33 7 births/3 living
IN IN IN
Byron Son Feb 1890-10 IN VA IN
Charles Son Dec 1897-2 IN VA IN
Lou Dau May 1900-0/12 IN VA IN
(The census image very clearly shows LOU)
From Heritage Quest Indiana Marriage Index:
Emery Love, 23, son of Edward and Mary (Sachs) md Lonie Pallen Dec 24, 1885;
Clay Cnty Bk 6, Pg 361 and
CH-23, 142
Checking this in reverse, I find:
Lonie Pallen and Lovie Pallen and Lonie Patten;
all married Emery Love Dec 24, 1885 in Clay Cnty
Lovie is the dau of Richard and Lida (Janson) and is 20
So, looking up Richard and Lida in the 1880 census, I found in Jasper Cnty,
Marion Twp, National Archives Film T9-0286, Pg 311c:
Richard Patton Self 72 PA -- -- Farmer
Lydia Patton Wife 62 VA -- -- Keep House
Robert P. Patton Son 25 IL PA VA Farmer
Jennie Patton Dau 17 IL PA VA
George Noland GSon 4 DC CT IL
John Leslie Other 28 IRE IRE IRE
Working On Farm
(This Jennie is 2 years off from Lou, but there is no Lou or Lon
Patten/Patton; there is a Mary Patton living with a Bridges family and
keeping house; she's 13 and in Waveland Twp, Montgomery Cnty)
I'm not researching this family; I just love a challenge!
Sharon Collins
Rapid City, SD
You could send for the marriage certificate, but even that will have to be
transcribed from the book by someone, so you're right back to
Lou/Lon/Pallen/Patton/Patten. Your only hope is a direct descendant of hers
reads your request and replies.
According to my 1970 census index for Clay County, there were no
Patton/Pallen families and the only Patten old enough to have a 4-yr old
daughter was Alice, 25, who was living with a Cunningham family and working
as a domestic and apparently no children.
You probably already have this too,
Byron Love, b. Feb 23, 1890, md Dorothy Meakin
Apr 19, 1916; Clay Cnty Bk 19, Pg 129

Subject: [INCLAY] Love in Clay County
I'm new to this list and wanted to see if anyone might be able to help. I
am
looking for info on the parents of Byron LOVE (b. 23 Feb 1890 in Brazil,
Clay, IN). He is the father of Doyne Marvin Love (my grandfather on my
father's side, b 7 Oct 1917 also in Brazil). I have found bits of info, but
it's all slightly conflicting. His father's name is Emory (or Emery-found
listed both ways). His mother is even more of a problem. I have found her
listed as Lou PATTON, Lon PATTON, Lon PALLEN and even Mary PATTEN. It is
most confusing. If it helps at all, Byron was married to Dorothy Franklin
Meakin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dawn Love - Fort Worth, TX
