Jan,
The middle initial "L" caught my eye because of "Charles L. & Sampson
L." One of Charles' granddaughters recently told me her mother, Charles'
daughter, always told her the "L" stood for Lionel. My Grandmother had always
said that Charles, a brother, and his father stowed away aboard a ship to get to Canada
and then to the United States. I think it must have been a generation or two behind
Charles. Anyway, my Grandmother heard it repeatedly while she was growing up. My
Grandmother also says their name used to be spelled "Mueller". Hopefully, the
Civil War Record will give some clues as to Sampson's past. It may be some time
before I hear from the Archives, but I will be glad to pass on any relavent information.
Thanks, Shawna
