WPA stands for Works Projects Administration. It was instituted by the Federal government
back during WWII to provide jobs. In 1942 the WPA compiled vital statistics records in
the different states (not sure how many were done). The Indiana marriage index was
extracted from these records. There are also birth and death indices; however, in
Indiana, births and deaths were not required to be registered prior to 1882. Even then,
the requirements were not fully comlied with until the early 1900s. The same is true for
marriage applications which include other valuable information in addition to date and
place married.
