Does anyone know if there was a Roos or Held family in Clay County, Indiana in the 1880s
and soon thereafter?
Note that the names could be spelled differently, for instance it could be Helt or Heldt.
Roos could be Roose, Rues, Ruse, or even the German spelling which I couldn't do here
as I can't make an umlaut.
I know it's a long shot, but a Mayme Held married Lawrence Otis Truttier of Clay
County and her family is a big mystery. She was raised by Roos', supposedly her
mother's aunt and uncle, after her father died in rioting in Chicago in 1885 and her
mother was of ill health (and died one year after giving her up according to family story)
so she gave her daugther to this Roos family. We believe the name was Philomena and
Theobold, or something similar to that. I haven't been able to confirm this yet, and
actually have found an Anne Held living in Terre Haute (where Mayme and Lawrence moved)
and giving birth to a son Nagle Held. We don't know if these are different Held's
or the same woman. If anyone has heard or seen the surnames Held or Roos in Clay County,
I'd appreciate the info. Thanks!
