Can anyone connect to this family? Herbert Gray, b. Oct 1896 (death
certificate states 1889) in Greenup, Cumberland County, IL and d. Nov.
24,
1970 in Indianapolis, buried Cottage Hill Cemetery, Brazil, was
married to
Grace May Campbell, b. June 8, 1878 in PA and died Dec. 20, 1943 at
their
home, 5 N. Harrison St., Brazil, buried Cottage Hill Cemetery, Brazil.
Herbert applied for his social security card on Feb. 2, 1937. At that
time,
he was residing at 5 N. Harrison St. in Brazil and working for Indiana
Gas
Utilities in Terre Haute. He stated his birthdate as October 23, 1896
and
his parents as George Gray and Emma Ray. His age at last birthday was
40.
Since Herbert himself provided this information, it would presume to
be more
accurate than the information on his death certificate and obit
(7-year
difference in birth years). Also, his parents, George Gray, b. abt.
1864 in
White County, IL and Emma Ray, b. abt. 1867 in Morgan County, IN were
married by her father, Elisha Ray, February 6, 1890 in Cumberland
County,
IL. Cumberland County does not have a birth certificate for Herbert.
His obit states he moved to Brazil, as a young boy, with his mother.
What
happened to his father? Also, from the dates above, his wife, Grace,
was 18
years older than he was. They had a daughter, Jenette, b. Aug. 25,
1914.
At that time, Herbert would have been 18 and Grace, 36. Grace had
been
married previously to Louis Morgan. They married Nov. 28, 1900 in
Diamond,
IN, and had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth.
Herbert's obit also states he had several step-nieces and nephews, but
does
not mention step sisters or brothers. Did his mother, Emma Gray
remarry and
have more children? Or was it his father, George? Herbert was
connected in
some way to John Thomas 'Tommy' Ramsey who died in Terre Haute in 1979
I
believe. The connection is not known.
Can anyone shed any light on this family? I can be reached directly
at
rzgrdn(a)rapidnet.com and will be happy to share info!
Thanks a lot,
Sharon (McCoskey) Collins
