I am not descended from George's children. I am pursuing 3 different avenues though.
#1 I'm interested in the Clay Co., IN George Lucas from NC, b. abt 1798. If he is son
of William Lucas of Randolph co., NC, then there might be a connection because this
William Lucas lived on Bumper's Fork, in Randolph Co., NC.
#2 My Godwin family moved from Sampson Co., NC to Randolph Co., NC about 1797. I'm not
sure why or on what land they moved to as there are no land grants or deeds for any
Godwins or name variations. A Dreed Godwin was taxed for 100 acres on Bumper's Fork.
Only three other men lived in this area - William Lucas, George Lucas (d. 1816), and John
Conner, so I'm thinking there might be some connection through inheritance of
marriage.
#3 I have a Nathan Goodwin (Godwin) who sold 40 acres of land to George Washingon Lucas.
It was a warrant, issued 8 Jan 1839, for $100, NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 Section 7 Township 12,
Range 5; [Source: Putnam Co., IN Deeds, Book G, p. 657]; If I follow the previous transfer
of this land, I have that Nathan Godwin bought the NW corner of the NE quadrant of S7,
T12N, R5W, 40 acres, which was granted 1 Aug 1839 (BLM). Again, this seems odd because
Nathan Godwin did not receive land grant until Aug 1839, however according to the deed, he
sold this land to George W. Lucas in Jan 1839. So Nathan must have created a title before
he even had the actual patent, which was not uncommon.
Do you know who this George Washington Lucas is in Putnam Co? Of course, Putnam borders
Clay.
