Surname: Thomas, Lankford, Lowdermilk
-------------------------
These tidbits were gleaned from the Oct & Nov issues of the Clay County
Advocated published in Bowling Green in 1854.
"Walk up the Captain's Office, and Settle"
The undersigned is desirous of settling up his business as soon as possible,
as he intends leaving the State in a few months. All those indebted to
him are respectfully requested to settle the same without delay, and by
doing so, they will save trouble to all interested, and cost to themselve.
Shallum Thomas
Bowling Green, Nov. 2, 1854 no.9
[note: it seems he had problems settling claims as later issues of the
Advocate had notices about the court activity]
Wednesday, Oct. 11 -
Harvey Lankford was committed to jail last night in default of bail, to
await the sitting of Court, for an assault and battery upon a lady from
whom he was recently divorced.
Wed. Sept. 20,1854 -
Judge Lynch
On Saturday night last A. W. Lowdermilk, Route Agent from Greencastle to
New Albany, was taken from his bed at his residence in this county, at
an unreasonable hour of the night, and "lynched" in a most cruel and unmerciful
manner. The cause for such a procedure against Mr. L. we have not learned.
What with tearing down reservoirs, buring out feed, __ dams, administering
lynch-laws, and the ladies stopping the liquor traffic, it will be readily
conceded that ours is an industrious and progressive community.
Note - Mr. Lowdermilk was not lynched as it was retracted in the Sept.
27 issue. However, later issues reveal there were questions if he was the
best person for the job and also question as to how he got the job.
