lgar4...Thank you for posting this information. Since my original, I have learned of the exact location of the "Puckett Cemetery". It is the burial location of David and Leanna Baber Puckett. The graves, once on a fence row, are now in the center of a large bean/corn field, approximately 3 miles south of Sanders Cemetery. I am related to all Pucketts you were so kind as to list at Sanders. Thank you. James Bledsoe

This is a digression, but my gg-grandparents, John Heath and ? Shaffer (sp? alas, Family Tree Maker isn't working right now) also came from Tuscawaras Co. in the 1840s. Has anyone out there run across any information about them? I have never found her parents.

Hi Bonnie. Fred is a distant cousin of mine. My maiden name is Harris. Our Harrises came from Tuscarawas Co., Ohio and from Mifflin Co., PA before that. My gggrandparents are Jacob Harris and Margaret Balder. Jacob and Margaret moved from Tuscarawas Co., OH to Owen Co., IN October of 1884. I think my Harrises are related to the Harrises that married into the Shonk line but as of yet, can't make a connection.
Jacob & Margaret had 9 children, 8 of whom survived to adulthood. Jacob & Margaret are buried in the German Reformed/St. Peter Cemetery in Owen County. My gggrandfather, Jacob Harris, is a brother to Fred's gggrandfather. I believe your Harrises came from KY, right?
It's been so long, I might have forgotten. My grandfather is Lester Harris who married Esther Hain. Lester's parents are Phillip Harris and Olive 'Ollie' Summers. Phillip & Ollie lived in Clay County. Sorry to ramble on. Thought I would just pass this along. Best regards, Carla Frazier

Message Board Post:
I just thought that I would pass this new information along to everyone, regarding our NASH Family, you may want to print this out and read it through, as it is quite long.
I told all of our family at the NASH Family Reunion (held in Caledonia, Missouri) in June, this year, that our NASH family surname has been hard to trace. That we have found it listed as NASH, MASH, NANCE and even MARSH, in Census Records, Marriage and Death Records.
In late August, I was sent information regarding a book that had been written and published by CLARENCE E. (Elmer) MASH in 1990. The name of this book is:
MASH 1635-1989: Our Ancestors
This book is no longer in print, and I bought the Microfilm, through the Family Search Library, in Salt Lake City, Utah, for our local Mormon Church Library, so they can keep a copy here in their Library.
I have made two trips to the Mormon Church, here in town, to read and research this Microfilm of this book. I have found my CLAIBOURN NASH / MASH born 1834 -1835 Illinois, and his parents WILLIAM MASH born 1805 -1810
Kentucky and LOUVINA (Maiden name unknown) born 1809 Kentucky, as well as Claibourn's four other siblings, Henry born 1827 Indiana, Elizabeth born 1832 Indiana or Illinois, James born 1838 Illinois, and Mary born 1839 Illinois, are all listed in this book. YES, "UNKNOWN" NASH is actually
WILLIAM MASH...........The Bricks, so to speak, have been knocked out of my Brick Wall, finally !!!
I am sure that cousin Erma's WILLIAM NASH / MASH is also in this book, as well as our JOHN W. "Jack or Jackson" NASH / MASH. I have not read through this complete Microfilm as yet, but with our DNA Testing on all three (3) of
these NASH lines matching a 25 Marker Test identically, I would say without a doubt that they are also listed in this book.
According to this book, my WILLIAM MASH is listed as the son of WRIGHT MASH and SALLY MARTIN.
WRIGHT and SALLY had the following children:
William MASH born 1805 - 1810 (my GGGrandfather)
Sally MASH born 1815
David MASH born 1810 - 1820
Martin MASH born 1810 - 1820
Polly MASH born 1816
UNKNOWN Male Child born 1820 - 1825
UNKNOWN Male Child born 1820 - 1825
Edward Harvey MASH born 1834 - Lived in Shannon County
There are seven MASH Families in Jasper Twp., Shannon County, Missouri, in the 1860 US Census Records. I am listing all seven:
1. Harry Mash 24 and wife Irena Mash 18
2. Harrison Mash 47 and wife Elizabeth Mash 48
3. Harrison Mash 25, Thomas Mash 22, John Mash 18,
Henry Mash 12, Acy Mash 10, Delilah Mash 7
4. Harvey Mash 24 and wife Martha Mash 18,
John F. Mash 6
5. Samuel Mash 34, wife Susan Mash 21, Nancy Mash
4, Uriah Mash 3, and Niten Mash 1
6. Wilson Mash 56, wife Ann Mash 58, Rebecca Mash 22,
George Mash 21, and Cyrus Mash 14
7. John W. Mash 48, wife Hannah Mash 40, Jerry Mash 19, Henry Mash 14, Thomas Mash 13, Amanda Mash 11, Johnson Mash 8, Wesley Mash 7, Clinton Mash 6, Ryly Mash 5, Mornin Mash 8 months old.
THE ABOVE FAMILY listed as # 7, is our JOHN W. "JACK or JACKSON" NASH, his wife HANNAH, and their family.
>From what I can see in Census Records, the name change took place with my Great Grandfather CLAIBOURN MASH and JOHN W. MASH and family between 1860 and 1880. Below are Census Records for 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880, showing when this took place.
Also remember my Claibourn's mother LOUVINA remarried on July 15,1847, in Richland County, Illinois. I have a copy of that Marriage Application and License, and it shows her name as LOUVINA MASH, and his name as Richard Pierce.

NOW, BACK TO THE BOOK:
I have located two daughters of Clarence E. Mash, who wrote and had his book published in 1990. As I said that book is out of print and no more copies are available.
HOWEVER, the daughters have agreed to fund a second publishing of the book, with some added information, as they have continually researched this family since the death of their father, Clarence E. Mash, 2 years after his publication. We do not have a price on what this book will cost as yet, they are checking with the printers, and on binding and covers this week, and will let me know as soon as they find out. They are planning on putting their new research that they have done on CD, and just reprinting
the book that their father had published in 1990.
There is currently 396 pages full of information, family group sheets, and sources, as to where Clarence E. Mash found his information regarding our family. He did major traveling and research in order to put this book together. His daughters Nadine and Sharon have continued his research, and have lots of other information to add.
I can also tell you that our NASH / MASH family has been traced back to 1635, in Ipswich, England (a small port city just north of London). Story has it that the surname actually started out as MARSH. They left England in
early 1635, and landed in Hingham Bay, Massachusettes, in late 1635. It was George MASH (MARSH), and two sons John MASH (Marsh) and Andrew MASH (MARSH) who came in first. John met and married Susanna Skelton in 1636 in Salem,
MA. They had ten (10) children.
They have been traced for many Generations down through Baintree, MA, into Franklin and Harrison County, Kentucky, into Cumberland County, Kentucky, up through Indiana, into Lawrence, Richland, and Clay Counties in Illinois, then into Missouri. From there our NASH / MASH families have moved into Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, California, Oregon and Washington, as well as other parts of the country.
>From my understanding this was a hardback bound book, and as I said quite large. I am very impressed just looking at the Microfilm, as I can see just how much attention and work that Clarence put into this book.
I just thought all of you NASH, MASH, MARSH researchers would like to see what I have found of my own family ancestry. As I said this has been one hard family for me to trace, and if I can help anyone else with this same line, I am very gald to do so.
You can email me directly at: ograndma(a)sbcglobal.net
I also have our family tree, "The Webs We Weave" currently posted on Tribal Pages, less all of this new Family information to date. I will be adding more information as soon as I get the new book in. My website address is:

Has anyone responded to your query yet?
I have some information, mostly obtained from another researcher.
William Joseph Watson was the son of James Thomas Hugo Harold John
Ebenezer Watson. James was born 23 Oct 1899, Sullivan Co. and died 30 April
1955 in Clay Co. I have a reference to a marriage to a Chamberlain approx
1918. In the 1920 census, he is listed as single and living at home, so
there is a discrepancy there. He had a son William Joseph b. 2 May 1920.
He then married Flossie Harris 24 May 1920. There is a 1930 census of James
F, Flossie and Billy J in Lewis Twp., Clay Co., but F matches none of his
several middle names.
James Watson was the son of Joseph Monroe Watson and Thursa Maybelle (Belle)
Mahan. Joseph Watson was b 15 March 1859, Sullivan Co. and died 29 Dec 1933
at his residence in Jasonville, Greene Co. He married Thursa on 7 Aug 1879
in Sullivan Co. They had 8 children that I am aware of. At his death in
1933, his obituary says 3 sons and 4 daughters living. His oldest son, Hud,
died in 1926.
Thursa Mahan was the daughter of William M Mahan and Sarah M Ammerman
(Hammerman?). She was b Oct 1861 probably in Sullivan Co. and died 1 May
1939 in Coalmont, Clay Co.
Joseph Monroe Watson was the son of Robert Watson and his second wife Nancy
Ellen Mahan who he married on 4 Oct 1855 in Sullivan Co. All I know of his
first wife is that her name was Margaret and that she was 26 in the 1850
census. Robert was born 2 April 1820. Where is in question as the 1850
census says KY and the 1860 census says IN. He died 19 Apr 1865.

Welcome! This is the former Rootsweb List, INCLAY. This group will be discussing the history and genealogy of Clay County, Indiana and its surrounding region.
