Oh Ginger, actually it isn't all cleared up - sorry to say. I know where that 5 Oct 1832 date comes from - The Clay County, Indiana Tract Book. What it means, I don't know. Neither am I happy with the deeds I have showing what became of George Lucas' land.
I find it confusing that the deed of 2 Dec 1836 is for one equal part and is signed by Solomon Lucas, Bird Light and Katherine Light. Bird Light is on there because he was her husband, but why would Solomon and his sister Katherine together only get one share??
I have a deed of George Lucas and wife getting one sixth equal share, and Elizabeth Cofer and husband one sixth equal share, but I've never found a deed to Berry Lucas and wife or for the other one sixth share.
Which of the six kids are you descended from? Pat

Hi Pat,
Yeah, I've looked at these two records in the blm website, George Lucas, section 1 was dated 9 Oct 1835 and section 15 was dated 1 Aug 1839. This was not what you had posted in your original post, which is why I was so confused. You had section 1 on 5 Oct 1832 and section 15 on 20 Apr 1837. I think we have this cleared up now. I apologize for the confusion.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for the clarification. There were a couple of Lucas families in Randolph Co., NC, including a GEORGE and WILLIAM LUCAS.
WILLIAM LUCAS, 30 acres, grant no 1875, granted 26 Nov 1802, entry no. 443, 18 May 1790, bk 116, p. 445, Bumper's fork
----------------------------
GEORGE LUCAS, 200 acres, grant no. 321, issued 24 July 1786, entry no. 1424, entered 6 Apr 1779, bk 59, p. 363, on Bumpass [Bumper's Fork] Fork of Little River;
GEORGE LUCAS, 100 acres, grant no. 616, issued 20 Dec 1791, entry no. 247, entered 13 Mar 1787, book 17, p. 388, Little River waters of Bumpass [Bumper's] Fork
GEORGE LUCAS, 100 acres, grant no. 1171, entered 7 June 1799, entry no. 156, entered 2 Sept 1796, Bk 104, p. 170, Waters of Buffalo Fork
GEORGE LUCAS, 50 acres, grant no. 2000, granted 29 Nov 1803, entry no. 54, entered 10 Feb 1793, bk 117, p. 347, E. side of Bumper's Fork
According to the NC Archives, Randolph Co., Estate Records, GEORGE LUCAS died intestate in 1816 leaving a wife, PEGGY LUCAS. His wife was probably Margaret (Peggy) Lucas who died in 1818. George and Peggy were probably parents of THOMAS LUCAS (b. abt 1760) who died in 1838 (see info on him and his siblings below).
There was also THOMAS LUCAS who died in Randolph co., NC in 1838. He did not have any children, but he had several brothers and sisters who contested his will. I believe they were children of George Lucas who lived on Bumper's Fork and who died 1816:
1. ELIZABETH LUCAS, md. John LATHAM and moved to I believe Clay Co., IN. John LATHAM was brother to my Sarah LATHAM who moved with her husband to Clay Co., IN abt 1830.
2. POLLY LUCAS, died unmarried, with no children in 1851, Randolph Co., NC; left will.
3. JOHN LUCAS md. Millbery Elizabeth GODWIN, stayed in Randolph Co., NC d. 1854 I believe
4. WILLIAM LUCAS, removed to IN about 1830
5. LYDIA LUCAS, md. James Presnall
6. CATHERINE LUCAS, md. Wm Archey
7. SALLY LUCAS, md. George Humble.
continued from earlier post regarding Jacob Auman...
The reasons for my investigating these families stems from ealier
connections in Randolph Co., NC.
The Nathan Godwin I am investigating (Sampson Co., NC to Randolph co., NC to
Clay Co., IN to probably perry Co., IL) was first found in Sampson Co., NC.
He and his brother Dred Godwin and his mother Rachel Godwin sold off their
father's land in 1795, Sampson Co., NC (father was Jonathan Godwin). In
1797, Rachel Godwin (now of Randolph Co., NC) sold more land to Ozias Beaman
(of Sampson Co., NC). By 1800, Nathan Godwin was head of house in Randolph
Co., NC with his mother and siblings living there. I have no idea where they
were living exactly or on whose land / house they were living. There are no
deed records I have found that say where or why they moved to Randolph Co.,
NC. Nathan Godwin did not buy land until 1817, when he bought 240 acres from
his father-in-law, John Latham. However, in 1799, Nathan Godwin was listed
as a chain carrier in a grant given to Richard Graaves for 50 acres of land
on waters of Little River, between John Graves (co-grantee) and Joseph
Hudson. So he had to have lived near these folks to survey the land.
Here are other clues with reference to Nathan Godwin's brother Dreg Godwin:
- In 1803, Nathan Godwin's brother "Dreed" Godwin was taxed for 100 acres
under Michael Harvey Esqr and 1 white poll. He was listed under Captain
Tucker's District.
- Dred Godwin married Peggy Ball in Randolph County, NC in 1806.
- "Etheldred" was taxed again in 1815 for 100 acres on Bumpers Fork under
Capt Harvey's district (+ 1 wp).
- And "Dred" was taxed again on 1820 Tax records for 100 acres on Waters of
Little River in Captain King's District, $700, 1wp.
So, where did this land come from. Was it willed to Dred Godwin? It's
probably the same land he was taxed for in 1803 and he wasn't yet married,
so it was probably not from his father-in-law. So I looked at who lived in
this area of BUMPER'S FORK and I found the following: There were 5
references to "Bumper's Fork" in the Randolph Co., NC Land Warrants
1778-1948: George Lucas in 4 of them and John Conner, who bought 100 acres
on Bumper's Fork, Randolph Co., NC, 26 Aug 1799.
I have a reference to George Washington LUCAS in Putnam Co., IN in 1839. A
Nathan "Goodwin" sold 40 acres to George Washington Lucas in 1839. This land
was bought by Nathan Godwin earlier in the year from the state. I do not
know, however, if this is the Nathan Godwin I have been researching or a
younger Nathan Godwin who WAS found on the 1840 Putnam Co., IN census
report, probably a son of the elder Nathan Godwin. So thus I have delved
into the LUCAS family history.
As for the LUTHER name, I have been following the Luthers and Hudsons
because they lived near my Nathan Godwin in Randolph Co., NC on the waters
of Little River and Uharrie River (Elijah Godwin's land).
Most of all, ironically, Nathan Godwin and his family migrated to Clay Co,
IN the same time your Auman family did, as well as the Graves, Latham, and
Bolling families did.
That's my story.
Ginger
Hi Mary,
Jacob Auman's daughter, Nancy Auman, md. John Newsom (b. 1822, NC, d. 1883,
Randolph Co., NC). John and Nancy Auman Newsom's son Emsley Newsom md.
Martha Royal, abt. 1859, NC. Emsley and Martha Royal Newsom moved to Sharp
Co., AR in the 1860s or 70s. Their daughter, Roberta Newsom (b. 23 Aug 1868)
md James Harvey Godwin, the brother of my ggg grandfather, David Orr Godwin.
Although I am following this family for a family friend, I am also
interested because of some earlier connections in NC. James Harvey Godwin's
family came to AR via IN and probably IL. His family was descended from
Elijah Godwin (and wife Nancy Lewis) who were born in Randolph Co., NC about
1800 and married in 1826. Elijah's wife, Nancy Lewis, was the daughter of
Lavinia Steed and John Lewis. Lavinia Steed was daughter of Nathaniel Steed
(d. 1805, Randolph co., NC).
I am trying to prove that Elijah Godwin (b. abt 1800) was son of Nathan
Godwin who moved to Randolph Co., NC about 1797. Nathan Godwin md. Sarah
Latham, daughter of John Latham (d. 1818). They married 1801, Randolph co.,
NC. Nathan Godwin sold his land in 1828, all except 20 acres. He then moved
to Clay Co., IN where he was enumerated on the 1830 Clay Co., IN census
report with 2m 5-10, 2m 15-20, 1m 20-30, 1m 50-60, 1f<5, 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15,
and 1f 50-60. Nathan Godwin's probably brother "Netheldred" Godwin was
enumerated on the same page. Nathan Godwin's probably son, Elijah Godwin,
was enumerated in Putnam Co., IN in 1830. Elijah Godwin was next found on
the Lawrence Co., AR 1840 census report. "Natheldred" "Godden" was then
found on the 1840 Putnam Co., IN census. However Nathan Godwin was no where
to be found. It is possible that Nathan Godwin and his wife Sarah moved to
Perry co., IL and that Nathan Godwin died before the 1840 census was taken
because an older Sarah Godwin was enumerated with children on the 1840 Perry
co., IL census as head of household.
More to come.

Hi Mary,
Thank you for clarification of Michael and Anna's children.
With regards to Andrew Auman...
Andrew Auman married first Barbara Luther (sister of George Luther) and had
two children, Jacob and George?
Then Andrew married 2nd Mary Cagle and had children who's last names were
Orman?
So did both Andrew AND his son George marry a Mary Cagle? - this is
confusing
I will be happy to share my connections in a separate post. Just want to get
these questions cleared up first.
Thank you,
Ginger

Ginger, if you go to the patent land site http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ you can look at the two patent records for George Lucas' in Clay co. One of them is 3817 which is the land in section 1 and the other is to land NW 1/4 of section 15 t12N R6W. Both say George Lucas of Clay co, Indiana and neither of them are dated 1832.
You can follow the land of section 15 through deeds of George Lucas who died Feb 1879. His children named in will were Livinia Wisenor, Rebecca Phegley, Jane Yocum, Martha Ann Thomas, William M. Lucas, Timothy S. Lucas, Elizabeth M. Lucas, George W. Lucas, Isaac Lucas and John Lucas.
I'm sure they had fathers and I wish I could tell you who they were. I think that George who died in 1879 was a son of William Lucas the rev soldier, but I certainly can't prove that and the other George Lucas I have no idea who his father was.

Hi Pat,
Sorry, I am still confused.
I thought the George Lucas who bought land in 1837 was the one who died in 1879?
And the other George Lucas who bought land in 1832 (entered patent #3817 in Clay co, Ind for the SWSW S1, t12N, R6W for 40 acres died intestate and his 6 children sold off their 1/6 portions of his land in 1836?
Do you have any idea of the parents of either of these George Lucas'?

GenealogyByGinger(a)nc.rr.com writes:
So far as I understand it, Michael Auman married Anna Marguerite Unknown and
they had the following children:
Children of Michael Auman and Anna Marguerite Unknown:
1. Andrew Auman (b. 1762 in Adams Co., PA, md. Barbara Luther?)
2. Maria Margaret Auman (also known as Margaret? md. John Slack)
3. Mary Auman (md. Jacob Strider)
4. Elizabeth Auman md George Luther
I corrected the list above MG
---------------------------------------
My Error! George Luther's wife was ELIZABETH AUMAN! I didn't read my reply
closely enough evidently or I would have seen that. Barabara Luther and
George Luther were brother and sister. Andrew AUMAN's second wife was Mary
Cagle. HER children bear the name spelled ORMAN.
Child #1 above, Andrew Auman (son of Michael and Anna Auman) had the
following children:
Children of Andrew Auman and Barbara Luther:
i. Jacob Auman (md. Rebecca Steed)
ii. George Auman (md Mary Cagle)
These 2 are the children of Barbara Luther. A daughter that lived with Mary
and the ORMAN family was named Barbara, and may have been Barbara LUTHER,
wife of Andrew AUMAN's child, but we aren't even sure when she was born! We
have been unable to follow up on her after her marriage.
There was one Barbara Luther, wife of Andrew, and Elizabeth Auman was
married to George Luther. I think Elizabeth and George named one of their
daughter's Barbara, but I am not sure about that.
I think Mary Cagle Auman/Orman died in Washington Twp., Clay Co., IN.
Children of Andrew AUMAN and Mary Cagle are:
David Orman
Henry Orman
Sinah Orman
Martin Orman
Andrew Orman
Elizabeth Orman
Mary "Polly" Orman
If you look at the original Will of Michael AUMAN, you will find it has the
name ORMAN on the title and inside the document.
Tell me about your self? I am so curious!

Hi Mary,
I'm sorry but I'm still a little confused and am new to this family so I
have a few more questions. First of all, thank you very much for the
detailed description of this family.
So far as I understand it, Michael Auman married Anna Marguerite Unknown and
they had the following children:
Children of Michael Auman and Anna Marguerite Unknown:
1. Andrew Auman (b. 1762 in Adams Co., PA, md. Barbara Luther?)
2. Maria Mary Auman (also known as Margaret? md. John Slack)
3. Mary Auman (md. Jacob Strider)
4. Barbara Auman (md. George Luther)
-----------------------------------------
Child #1 above, Andrew Auman (son of Michael and Anna Auman) had the
following children:
Children of Andrew Auman and Barbara Luther:
i. Jacob Auman (md. Rebecca Steed)
ii. George Auman
iii. David Orman Sr.
iv. Andrew Orman (Jr., b. 1808)
v. ? Henry Orman
vi. ? Martin Orman
-----------------------------------------
Now you said "the Orman brothers and sisters were the children of Mary Cagle
and the Auman brothers were Barbara Luther's family?"
- WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
There are two Barbara Luthers, right?
1. Barbara Luther who married Andrew Auman (son of Michael)
2. Barbara Auman (daughter of Michael) who married George Luther
To which do you refer above?
Who is Mary Cagle?
Sorry about all the questions.

Ginger, the George Lucas who bought land in 1832 is not their father. I believe he was a son of William Lucas. He died in 1879 in Clay Co, Ind.
George Lucas who entered patent record #3817 in Clay co, Ind for the SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 section 1, township 12 north, range 6 west for 40 acres died intestate. His children (Thomas, Catherine, George, Solomon, Elizabeth, Berry) were selling their 1/6 shares of this land beginning in Dec 1836. These are recorded in Book G, pages 552-555 in Clay Co, Ind.
George Lucas was very careful not to be on any census records. The only one that I really think is of his family is the 1830 in Putnam Co, Ind. I think I've put that on this forum about who was in his household at that time. His second wife had a son so he must be accounted for.
Does this answer your question? Pat
Hello Ginger,
Yes, DNA tests show that Jacob AUMAN, George AUMAN, David ORMAN, Sr and
Andrew ORMAN 1808 are descended from the same man. The common ancestor is ANDREW
AUMAN, son of Michael AUMAN and Anna Margareta, maiden name unknown. I haven't
found any of Henry or Martin's ORMAN family to join the DNA study. The ORMAN
brothers and sisters were the children of Mary Cagle and the AUMAN brothers
were Barbara Luther's children. Mary Cagle went to Blount Co., TN with her
children and maybe one daughter of Barbara Luther AUMAN and Andrew. Andrew AUMAN
had 3 children in his household in the 1800 census in Randolph Co., NC, then
in 1810, across the county line in Moore County, he has 10 children!
Jacob SLACK was married to Maria Margaret AUMAN in Frederick Co., MD. She
was Andrew AUMAN's sister. Mary AUMAN married Jacob STRIDER, she also was a
sister. A third sister, Barbara AUMAN married George LUTHER in Frederick Co.,
MD. Michael AUMAN and these married children all moved to Randolph Co., around
the same time. I don't know if Michael was the immigrant for we don't have
proof of his birth. He died in Randolph Co., NC where he owned a great deal of
land.
The ORMAN brothers and sisters were in Blount Co., TN as early as Jan 1821
when David Sr married Zilphia Rogers Davis. Henry Orman married Nancy Lyle
probably in Sevier County, TN because we find no marriage record for the two of
them. Martin Orman married Sally Rogers, sister of Zilphia in Blount Co.
Andrew Orman, my gg grandfather married Nancy Comer in Clay Co., IN just after
moving to Washingon Twp., Clay County along with his 3 brothers and at least
two sisters, Mary who was the wife of Willoughby Davis, (Zilphia Rogers Davis
son) and Elizabeth who married Jacob Wheeler. Sinah Orman married Albert
Wiseman and moved to Pulaski Co., MO where she died and left a small famiy.
Another sister named Barbara married Robert Johnston and I have no further
information about her. She is maybe the child of Barbara Luther AUMAN. David Sr,
Henry, Martin, Andrew 1808, Jacob Wheeler, and Willoughby Davis all went to Clay
Co., IN. Henry, Martin and Andrew are all buried down in the area along the
county line with Owen Co., IN.
The Slack's, Cagles, Orman's, Luther's, Kendal's, and Comer's all went to
Clay County, IN around the fall of 1830 and over the next 10 years. From there,
David Sr, Jacob Wheeler, Willoughby Davis and David Sr's 2 older sons moved
to Wapello Co., IA.
Query: And are you also saying that Maria Margaret Auman (md. John Slack) was
Andrew Auman Sr's (b. 1762, PA) sister and that Andrew and Maria Auman's
parents were Michael and Anna Margaret Auman?
Ans: Yes, Maria Margaret Auman Slack was the sister of Andrew b 1762 in
Adams Co., PA. and daughter of Michael and Margareta AUMAN.
Query: We think that is why he and Margaret Auman Slack, Jacob and Mary
Auman Strider, Andrew and Barbara Luther Auman, George and wife Elizabeth Auman
LUTHER along with Michael Auman, their father moved to the Seagrove area of
Randolph Co., NC.
Ans: We know they all moved to Randolph Co., NC after 1790. John Slack had
served in the Rev War with Washington and had traveled thru that beautiful
area during his service. He knew the great possibilities for that part of the
country.
Query: Are you saying that Jacob was married to Mary Auman Strider? - do
you mean Mary Strider Auman? Ans: Jacob AUMAN son of Andrew and Barbara
Luther AUMAN was married to Rebecca Steed. (The DNA has been tested for this
family and matches my Andrew ORMAN line exactly) I don't have a lot of informtion
about the Strider's, but recently Jacob and Mary Strider's graves were found
and they are the oldest recorded graves in that part of the country. Michael
AUMAN is probably buried there along with Margaret, his wife.
Query: And that Andrew (jr?) was married to Barbara Luther AUMAN?
Andrew JR was born in 1808 and married Nancy Comer in Clay Co., IN. My line,
and it has also been tested for DNA. It matches.
and that George was married to Elizabeth Auman Strider - do you mean
Elizabeth Strider Auman? Ans: No George AUMAN was married to Mary Cagle and
lived in the area just south of Seagrove in Montgomery Co., NC. His DNA has
also been checked. It matches the other Orman/Auman markers.
I hope this is more clear than my old posting. Now, tell me about your
AUMAN/ORMAN connection. This list has been too quiet for a long long time. Maybe
we can get some discussion going?
I didn't get to go to the AUMAN Reunion this year. My brother in law died
suddenly on Friday before it was held. I learn so much more every time I go up
there and they make me feel that I belong. The Orman's out in Ottumwa didn't
hold a reunion this past summer. Dianne Underwood is always instrumental in
getting it up and running, but she is being treated for lung cancer!
There was a quite a surprise when the DNA for David Sr's oldest son Elijah's
line! It is no match with the Orman's, Auman's or even Davis! I hope we
find another descendent of his to test. Right now, I have a $30 coupon
available for use by some man of the Auman or Orman name.

Hi,
Could you tell me how you knew that George who bought land in 1832 was the father of Thomas Lucas, Katherine Lucas Light, Solomon Lucas, George Lucas, Berry Lucas and Elizabeth Lucas Cofer Ball ???
I can't find this George Lucas in any Clay Co., IN census reports.

Hi Mary,
I had a few questions about your post from August regarding Andrew Auman's
family.
If I have this correct, you have proof via DNA that the following are
children of Andrew Auman (b. 1762, Adams Co., PA):
Andrew Auman - is this Auman or Orman?
Henry Auman - is this Auman or Orman?
Martin Auman - is this Auman or Orman?
David Orman Sr
George Auman
Jacob Auman - was he b. 1787 and husband of Rebecca Steed, and father of
Nancy Auman who married John Newsome?
And are you also saying that Maria Margaret Auman (md. John Slack) was
Andrew Auman Sr's (b. 1762, PA) sister and that Andrew and Maria Auman's
parents were Michael and Anna Margaret Auman?
I was also confused by the following:
"We think that is why he and Margaret Auman Slack, Jacob and Mary Auman
Strider, Andrew and Barbara Luther Auman, George and wife Elizabeth Auman
Strider along with Michael Auman, their father moved to the Seagrove area of
Randolph Co., NC"
Are you saying that Jacob was married to Mary Auman Strider? - do you mean
Mary Strider Auman?
And that Andrew (jr?) was married to Barbara Luther Auman?
and that George was married to Elizabeth Auman Strider - do you mean
Elizabeth Strider Auman?
Also, how did the Auman reunion go?

Does anyone have information on any of the family members of John and Jane Lucas, in Cass township of Clay county in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Family members are William, Thomas, George, Reuben, Lucinda and John T Lucas. I believe the four brothers, William S., Thomas,George and Reuben all served in the Union Army, 1st heavy artillery reg, Co 1, Indiana.
William Spenser Lucas (1833) married Rachel Williams in Terre Hauyr in 1864 and moved to Oklahoma after the war. Mary Hamilton
