Thank you, All, for your suggestions and help with my search for answers on
my MOORE family.
The question: What made a large number of Clay Co, IL residents head to
Indiana together after the 1860 census?
I was taking 2nd and 3rd looks again at the Clay Co, IN censuses and the IN
county where they settled and found A LOT of Illinois families nearby.
Practically all in the one township had children born in IL. I need to do more
research but many of the same names are in the Clay Co census that are in IN
one near my family.
Thanks again!

Janice -
I live in Hawaii and have had good results with research done by CCGS. My
family has been in Clay County since 1830, so I have a lot of ancestors that
hailed from there.
CCGS will take an advance deposit - say $25 - and their volunteers will look
at all the source documents they have and send you copies. They also have a
listing of all readable tombstones in Clay County cemeteries - that could be
a big help for you as well.
As I live in Hawaii - it makes a lot of sense for me to use CCGS. The cost
in quite nominal and you can get good records from one source. Volunteers do
the research, so you aren't paying professional rates to get what you want.

But my family lived there until the mid-1860's. What is available at the
courthouse for the time period of 1851 - 1869? The USGENWEB site states there
are BMD records available but does not give time frames. I am hoping there
are other records as well.
The Clay County Genealogical Society has so many records available for
researchers.
What source records are available? I did not see the specific Clay Co ones
listed on the site. If I knew, I could ask for searches of records. I am
looking specifically for primary source records so I don't make a mess out of
my search and don't spend too much money. I know this surname is too general
to ask for them to give me John MOORE. That's one of the names but it is
soooo very common and I have more than one John.
I do see that if records only are requested, I can keep the cost down but I
don't know what records they offer. There is no timeframe on the birth,
marriage, death records.
If you aren't a member and do genealogy research in Clay County, you
should be come a member. You may contact them at ccgsilib.org
write them at _research(a)ccgsilib.org_ (mailto:research@ccgsilib.org) . Be
sure to put the word research in the subject line. It is one place you need
to
go when doing research of Clay County families. The address is PO Box 54
Center Point, IN 47840. They are open on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
1:00 to 4:00 PM.
I don't live anywhere near Clay Co so I can't make a day trip to do research
or attend meetings. The website does offer lots of info and indicates that
when you come in there is much to look thru but I just don't have that
ability.
I am sure there is a large Family File for the Moore Family.
MOORE, I do imagine there is but there were several MOORE lines in Clay Co.
Also, per the website, they will not copy the entire file and I need
specific names to ask for research. Since I do not know James' parents or the names
of several of James' and Sarah's children who died young, I cannot ask for
research. I can't ask for what I don't know exists.
This seems like I would have to visit the library personally and then make
visits to cemeteries in hopes of finding the names. Oddly, I've done it
before when the odds were against me. It seems for a general search of this
surname, a visit to the library might be of help but it will be some time before
that is possible.
If one did make a trip to Clay Co, do they offer hours by appointment? I
would not be able to stay for 3 days to visit the library during their regular
hours if I could get there by Monday.
Thank you, Janice

Thank you for your suggestions.
I guess I am not being clear. Does anyone know what source materials might
be available for me to seek in the way of actual documents that still survive
in Clay Co. when researching 1840 - 1870? This family settled in a town in
MO that seemed to burn their courthouse every time my family had a document
created. Many documents after that were lost in a family house fire in KS.
I have no older relatives living to ask. The census is a great clue but
does not help with those huge 9 year gaps in between.
I have some hearsay materials and clues to this family but as you-all know,
MOORE is a common name and it is too easy to get off on the wrong MOORE line.
Thank you!

Janice,
I don't think that I can be of much help in that department. I have not
done any physical research in Clay County (and I'm not that far away). I
got some of it online and the rest from my grandparents (before they died).
My aunt is still alive, but she can't help with the Moore line since she was
a Hill. I only have one Moore aunt living and she is in Colorado. I don't
remember if Terri is in Clay County or not. You might check out the web
site. I think it had information about research in Clay County.

Besides the MOORE connections I hope to find, do any of you who really know

Issac Moore, patriarch of his Moore line, moved to Brazil IN in the 19th
century. He came from Ohio. I believe that Druscilla Moore was one of his
descendants.
Issac Moore (aka "Ike") owned quite a bit of land in Clay County and was my
3rd G Grandfather.
Below was what I obtained from the Indiana Gen Web page. Lucretia Moore was
my 2nd G Grandmother.
Are we cousins? I'd like more info on Issac Moore.
Shown below is an indvidual named Major Alva Ringo, b Jan 1870. He was no
doubt named for Major Ringo who lived in Posey Township and who was heavily
involved with the Bee Ridge Christian Church, founded by William Yocum who a
was a well known Indiana State Legislator. Major Ringo was a "Junior" and was
born in KY before migrating to Indiana. "Billstown" was named for Yocum.

The last I heard, my cousins were still running it, but I'm not absolutely positive. I tried at one time to connect the two Moore families and couldn't. Mine came from Ireland in 1804.

Contact them. They will tell you if they want it. They accept donations of
any kind of material related to the county. If they don't need it, they will
accept it and resell it. The Society operates only on money earned by them with
no subsidies.

Actually, I wondered if they need a copy. I have one here.

Yes, I think it is still available, although it isn't listed at the
Genealogy Society site at ccgsilib.org. If you contact the library at
_research(a)ccgsilib.org<mailto:_research@ccgsilib.org>_ (mailto:research@ccgsilib.org<mailto:research@ccgsilib.org>) with the subject "research", they
will let you know. I haven't been to the Library in quite some time so I am
not current with most information. Most of the Cemetery Books are still
available too. Van Buren and Washington Twp. Cemeteries are still being compiled. As
I understand it, they have been walking the cemeteries again and updating
their files so that those two township's books will be complete when published.
