Hello Don: Are you the Don with the Starks? I have a Short and Givens
family in Kentucky in 1860 census who are listed as seamstress and something else.
Would be interested in this in Lewis because that is where they are in 1870
in Clay County. Thanks in advance.
Kaye
While looking for an ancestor in Lewis Township of Clay County in 1860, I
noticed that not only she but every adult female on quite a few pages
before and after the one on which she is listed seems to be described as a
weaver, a seamstress, or a spinster (usually the younger girls for the
last). The men are listed as farmers, as we would expect, though there
are a few other professions as well.
All this makes me wonder whether there was in fact something of a weaving
colony in the township at that time, or whether the census enumerator
simply listed the women in these categories for a reason known only to
him. (I've never seen such a situation in another township in any census
year, so it might have been a quirk of the enumerator.)
Can anyone familiar with the history of the township help me solve this
little mystery?
If you would like to look at the listings to which I refer, begin with page
617 and scroll in each direction.
Many thanks for any help,
Donn Neal
Hello again Bart: I sent an email but don't think I have had an answer.

No. The Holland family I am connected with did not have any Indiana connections until the 1960's. Good Luck with your search!

I have learned nothing new about the 2 previous children of Andrew and Nancy Comer Orman.
We are now in the process of DNA testing for the Auman Orman line. We hope to tie more of the families together and to prove the lineage we believe exists. If you are interested, contact me personally. WE need more members of the other Orman, Auman, Ammon, Oerman, etc families to test. We presently have two Orman and one Auman.

Coletta,
Forgot one thing in my first followup to your request. If you do go online to check out the obituary database, you will also find another listing for a Richard D. McCann as well. Don't know if this has any connection or revelance to what you are researching but you might want to check it out regardless. Richard D. McCann passed away on 05-20-2001 at the age of 79 years. He was close enough in age to have possibly been a brother of your Hugh N. McCann.

I have several pictures of the old red brick & stone original Clay County Court House, and cannot, from any of the old pictures and photos, tell in which direction the front of the building faced.
Is there anyone who might still be around who would maybe know this for a fact, or is there anyone else who might know this bit of information, regardless of their age??
Any information on this request, based on fact or 1st hand knowledge, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a million!!

There was a person by the name of Ira Holland who may have been a cousin of mine. Do you have any connection to the Holland family?
The Indiana Gazette newspaper had this to say
about the state legislature in its issue of Feb. l7,
l825:
"An act for the formation of a new county
out of the counties of Owen, Vigo, Sullivan
and Putnam." I would guess this is Clay.
~~Dixie Kline Richardson
The history of Clay County, taken from Blanchard's book published in 1884
reads on Pg 11 :
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana.
That from and after the first day of April next, all the tract of country
included
within the following boundaries, shall form and constitute a new county to be
known and designated by the name of the county of Clay, to wit: Beginning
at the Southwest corner of Township 9 NOrth, Range 7 West, thence East ten
miles, thence North twelve miles, thence East six miles, thence North nine miles,
thence West four miles, thence North nine miles, thence West ten miles,
thence South six miles, thence West two miles, thence South twenty-four miles to
the place of beginning.
Section 3 That John Denny, of Putnam County, John Bigger, of Owen County,
Rezin Stulby of Vigo County, Jacob Bell of Parke County, and James Smith of
Greene County, are hereby appointed Commissioners agreeably to the act entitled
"An act fixing the seat of Justice of all new counties hereafter to be laid off."
The article goes on to say that the counties bordering Clay were:
Parke, organized 1821 to the North
Putnam and Owen to the East, 1822 and 1818
Greene on the South, 1821
Sullivan and Vigo on the West 1817 and 1818

I can answer the question about Vigo and Clay County lines.
Prior to 1825, Clay County had not been formed. The line between Vigo on the West, and Owen County on the East was just about where St. Rd. 59 runs North and South.

I did know they were right next to each other. I was just trying to find out if at one time they may have been the same county or something along those lines.

Terre Haute has always been in Vigo County. Both Vigo and Clay Counties are adjacent to each other, so many times people who lived in the country may be listed as being from both areas. Many people from Clay County were born in Vigo County.
