Your email mentioned the Crist family and something called the Pigeon Roost
Massacre. I have a good deal of information about the Crist family
(Virginia/Ohio and beyond in the Dunkard Church) in a book entitled Lest we Forget and
Tales of Yesteryear. If I can do a lookup for you I'd be happy to do so. What
was the Pigeon Roost Massacre?
Frank in Virginia.

Hello Pat: Thank you for the site. The first pastor listed is Abraham Stark
and that is my husbands fourth great grandfather. The first two people that
are listed under Smith in the cemetery are Anthony and Hanna (Sparks) Smith
who are his third great grandparents. The Starks married Smiths at his
greatgrandparents marriage. Since I don't know Hanna's parents I can go no where with
that at the moment. I know all of these families were connected to the Baptist
movement and intermarried several times. Abraham, three of his sons, and his
brother and some of his brothers sons started Baptist churches all over
southern Indiana and northern Ky. and into Illinois. Thank you so much for what
you have sent.
Regards,
Kaye
Names Connected
Stark's, Bigg's, Colling's, Crist, Richey,Elston, Smith, Tryon, Spark or
Sparks, Hildebrand, Leer, . Some of these people are connected to the Pegeon
Roost Massacre. Abraham and Sarah Stark are buried in Clay County , Lewis Twp.,
in the Friendly Grove Cemetery. ( Do you have any information on this
cemetery?)
Kaye,
There are several Smith's buried in 2nd Prarie Creek cemetery at this site.
Could some of them be yours?

There a lot of Sparks of mine there also.

Hello Pat: I would say on the surface that these are the same families. I
believe it was Shelby County that JW. Smith was born in 1811. Knowing how
interrelated so many of the families were I would say we probably have cousins
marrying cousins for maybe three generations. I would love to have your Sparks
information just to have handy to look at as I find things. I do not have Hanna
Sparks parents at this time. I haven't been working on it since we thought
we were going to Indiana and I put it aside to do while there and have been
busy on other lines. I think that William Smith and Katie Spoon probably
migrated from North Carolina but so far haven't gotten that locked down either.
William was in the Revolution and the War of 1812 according to his son. I do have
a muster register from New Jersey showing a William Smith and a John Wilkison
as recruiters. William Smith named his one son John Wilkison Smith. I have
fragmented trails but nothing concrete. Your Smith's, or Sparks are related
to any of the Starks too are they. They are also Vigo and Clay Counties. I
know that I have several of the Smiths buried in the Smith Cemetery in Vigo.
Thanks for the answer and help. Be nice to find the connection.

I am related to the Smith Sparks line. His brother Owen was my
gg-grandfather. I have the following Smith's who married Sparks:
John Smith--Hannah Sparks--06 Sept 1808, Jefferson Co. KY
John C. Smith--Elizabeth Sparks--25 Feb 1820, Jefferson Co. KY
Mary Smith--Richard Sparks (father of Smith and Owen)--27 Mar 1806, Shelby,
KY
Do you have the parents of the Hanna Sparks that married Anthony Smith? I
do not have her.
I have lots on the Sparks if you need more but no more on the Smiths.

Hello: I am just clearing off some emails and found this one on the Sparks.
We have a Hanna Spark married to Anthony Smith March 31, 1831 in Vigo County.
I have that she and her family were from Sullivan County and came there from
Kentucky. Anthony's brother John Wilkison Smith married Mary Ann Tryon March
20, 1834 in Vigo County. I know there are Tryon's in Clay Co. and probably
Sparks too. In the next generation Smith married Smith. These are all
grandparents of my husband. Do you have a Hanna Smith whose parents were in Sullivan
Co. in the early 1800's? There are other Sparks that married into the Smith
family also and I find the name Smith Sparks listed also. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. The oldest Smith we have who are the parents of Anthony and
John Wilkison Smith are William Smith and Katherine (Katie) Spoon. John
Wilkison was born in Kentucky in 1813.

This Jeremiah was born 1792 Virginia. He and Mary married 1812 Jefferson County, Kentucky. I haven't any documentation for name of his father but suspect that it was John. He didn't arrive in Clay County, Indiana until sometime between 1850 and 1860.

Do you know if Jeremiah was born in NC? If so, was he the son of James? James is shown in the 1820 Census with a son and 3 daughter < 10. One of the daughters was Lorena Kirk who married Stephan Shipman. Her sister Winneford m. Nicholas Shipman. We have been seeking the brother. Lorena named a son Jesse. All were in the area of Monroe, Clay and Sullivan Co. Indiana around 1850. Could Jeremiah have been the missing brother?

Looking for Joseph Howard (sometimes listed as Edward) Petty (b. 1860-61?) - he married Hattie Jane Walker - her grandparents raised her: David and Elizabeth (Clifton) Pennington (Hattie was from Doniphan, KS and Hendricks, Indiana) --- She and Joseph had children in Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas. In the 1895 Kansas census they are listed as Edward and Hattie Petty with Florence being one year old.
They later immigrated to California and he died in 1919. Children were: Florence Ellen 1894, Earl Henry 1896, Charles Arthur 1899, Margaret Louise 1902 (she would be my direct line), Gladys Alora 1906 (b. CA) , Jossie Blanch 1909 (b. CA) , Ralph Howard 1911 (b. CA - and was a dwarf - only one in family line that i know of). It is the Petty/Walker family line that I am searching for --- Robin --- well, and pennington/clifton :)
I don't mind if you mention my name, regarding the Luther books. Just be sure
and mention that I have all my work on Rootsweb.com, World Connect. I am
getting old, and really can't cope with a lot of correspondence, but I don't
really have anything I haven't posted. I am always happy to get extensions to any
of the lines, though.
Lou,
You are correct and the Luther Book at the Genealogy Society are your work!
It is very good work, I should add. I don't like to mention owners of the books
without prior permission. I mentioned Maria Margaret Auman and George Luther
because she fits into my Orman line. Some other Orman and Comer lines connect
to Michael and Wiliam Luther.

I am typing the biographies from it.

Actually, that's not quite accurate. As far as I know none of the descendants
of George and Mary Auman Luther came to Clay County. The George she asked
aout was the son of Christian Luther, whose whole family came there. There were
also some of the family of Jacob Luther, a brother of Christian. I have all the
Luther information I know of for early Luthers posted at Rootsweb.com, World
Connect. You can search just a name, or in the box that says go to a specific
file, enter user name loupero and go right to my file, click on L for Luther.
Let me know any connections.
George, son of Christian, was my direct ancestor, and his children are named
in the land records of Clay Co, even though the probate records were lost in
the fire.
also try bev carman she has lots of information.

According to my grandmother, Thomas Leachman, his son, James Thomas Leachman, and James' wife, Susan True Leachman, are all buried in the Centerpoint Cemetary. James and Susan's daughter, Phoebe Evelyn Leachman Bevis is buried at Highland Lawn Cemetary in Terre Haute, IN. I have all of their death and birth dates, but not much else on them.
I put a book in the Family Histories Section for the Luther and Cole Families
that was donated a couple years ago. We don't have an Index for it in the
Library. But a great deal of information is contained within it's pages.
