I do not know about the Miller & Son, but there is a Cottage Hill Cemetery in Posey Township, Clay County. You can go to http://www.ccgsilib.org/ and find information on the cemeteries. This is the Clay County Genealogical Society. There is a lot of information there.

Thanks ever so... I knew Sarah had married a Hillman. There were two boys born to Adam Unclesbee and Sarah who took the surname Hillman when they fought in the Civil War.
Hopefully someone will be able to trace Adam Unclesbee's lineage - I suspect he was related to the Poffenbergers because Adam Poffenberger was Sarah's grandfather, and if Adam was a cousin it is possible he was named after his maternal grandfather.
Again, thanks for your info - I will keep it on file. Marilyn

I am attempting to trace Adam Unclesbee's lineage. I believe his father may have been Zach Unclesbee and his mother a Poffenberger. Adam died in IL in 1846. Thanks much, sorry I am so late in getting a reply... Marilyn

I appreciate all the intrest you have shown in my family. Let me explain in a little more detail. Mary Elizabeth (Cunningham, Wilson) was born in Clay City Indiana, about 1846. (She gives a different age on every census) We have this from family records and census records confirm this. What I have wanted to know the most is the name of Mary's father, who according to the family was a full blood Cherokee Indian. I believe that he was full blood Indian, I'm not sure if it was Cherokee. What I have searched for is her marriage to a man named ? Gilbert. I believe this was her first marriage and she had two children by this marriage. Her first child a daughter died young in child birth. Her second child William Edward Gilbert was married several times, and lived until 1959. He died in Oklahoma, but also lived in Arkansas. I'm not sure when he left Indiana. His death certificate gives no information about his mother but says his father's name was Malen Gilbert This information was!
given by his son. A child of Mary's had told my mother that Gilbert's first name was Rantz. When William Edward was married the first time he is listed as W.E. Gilbert and he list his father's name as Sant, and his mother's maiden name as Wilson. ( It is possible he did not know his father's name, as Mary is living with someone else by the time he is two years old.) If I could find Mary's marriage to GIlbert, maybe it would list her maiden name which should be the name of her father. I find Mary marrying a Spiker after her marriage to Gilbert. She is only married to Spiker about a year and then she married Ratliff Michael. The Michael gets changed to Michaels. She and Ratliff move from Indiana to Sedwick KS about 1885, where Mary's last child Grace is born. The family moves to Oklahoma and are true sooners. I find Mary's only brother Robert Hale known as blind Bob living with his mother Louisa until about 1870 in the Clay City Indiana area on the census. I have a feeling t!
hat Louisa died between 1870 and 1880 as I don't find her on the censu
s again after 1870. Bob is then found living close or with Mary and or some of Mary's children. Most of Mary's children live to be very old and have death certificates, but all either list maiden name as unknown or give different names. Cunningham and Wilson seem to be the names that appear most often. Mary's mother was Irish, so I have thought that maybe Cunningham was her mother's (Louisa's)maiden name. Louisa and the Indian man jumped the broomstick as they could not legally marry, so perhaps Mary used her mother's maiden name as hers.

The Historic Atlas of Indiana series may be an invaluable aid to Genealogists, Historians and researchers in search of 19th century Indiana places. Each Atlas CD consists of a series of 8 or 9 bordering counties making up 1 of 11 Zones that depict all 92 Indiana counties. Each Zone Atlas contains 400 dpi scanned images of vintage 1876 county maps that are organized and presented in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). Original paper source quality varied from county to county; however, every effort has been made to retain the integrity of the original maps during conversion to digital format.
Each county map may include the following 19th century features:
* roads, railroads and canals
* cities, towns and villages
* post offices and government sites
* one-room schoolhouses, churches and cemeteries
* rivers, streams and ferries
* industrial sites, furnaces and mills
* early homesteads and farms
* and much, much more
The Adobe Acrobat Reader for MS Windows is needed to view, zoom, pan and print from the PDF map images contained in this atlas, and is included free on each CD. No other software is necessary.

I think you can't find him because he died. If this is the same man, he appears in the 1910 Clay County census as John Lehmann, age 63, wife Laura, age 60,daughters Selma, 35, Lena, 22, and Vernice 17. The family was living in the 1st ward of Brazil, IN, T624, Roll 343, p. 32, lines 34+ He was born in Germany as were his parents. They have been married 40 years, 1st marriage for both. She is the mother of 10 children, 6 still living. Laura was born in Germany as were her parents. The census taker visited in April, 1910.
He appears in the Vigo County Public Library's online obituary index as his obit first appearing on Nov. 1, 1910, age 65, p. 9 Terre Haute Tribune. Very likely this is the same John Lehman(n) unless you know that he is too old to be your person. I realize there is a slight age discrepancy there, but there could be typos in the entry, or it may just have a different age than the census. Certainly not unusual. Until you actually see the obit, you can't be sure if it is your man or not.
The Brazil Public Library should have the Brazil Times (or whatever it was called at that time) on microfilm - I know they have some in the twenties and thirties, so they may have this far back as well. Give them a call. The genealogy section and newspaper microfilms are in the library's annex building. They could look for an obit for him and send it to you for a modest fee. Generally the hometown newspaper had much better obits than Terre Haute, which is 15 miles away.
Laura's obit appeared August 21, 1929 Terre Haute Tribune, page 2, age 79
Hope this helps.
