Mary, Thanks for answering my mail about Mines. I am interested in one in
Moweaqua, Illinois. There was a huge fire in that mine at the turn of the
century around 1908. My mother in law's three siblings were born in Moweaqua
the last being 1907 and then the family moved to Witt. They were miners and I
wondered if that is why they moved. If you would run across anything on it I
would greatly appreciate hearing. Thanks again, Barbara Rector Hill
<Mary, is this book only for the Indiana area? Barbara Rector Hill>
Yes, pretty much the Clay County area.
I volunteered to start a notebook when the Library had received so many
requests related to the coal mines in the area. The library has been
collecting just anything that pertains to the miners and mines of Clay and
surrounding Counties to include obits, pictures, stories, letters, and
articles about mine disasters, copies of death certificates and also the
certificates that miners had to obtain in order to work in the mines. I am
also attempting to identify the coal mines and their locations. When the
volunteers at the library conduct searches, or cut and paste in the family
files, in answer to queries they make copies of any mines information they
find. When I get to Indiana, I add that information to the notebook. I have
also made an index of each mine and name in the book including survivors
found in the materials collected.
I am still looking for additional information to include in the notebook.
Donations may be sent to CCGS, PO Box 56, Center Point, IN 47840. Attn:
Miners Notebook. Also, information may be sent to me personally at
Mary2gard(a)aol.com.

Mary, is this book only for the Indiana area? Barbara Rector Hill
I sent a message to Becky from her address at the bottom of the Clay Census
page, but it bounced back. Thanks to her transcription, I found 3 families
that had stumped me for several years. Their names have been horribly
corrupted by the system, and that is no doubt why I could not find them in
the census. Once I discovered one, I knew the others would likely be in
Knightsville too. It is so much easier paging through a transcribed copy
than the original microfilm, as far as the "finding" stage.
In the 1900 Clay County Census, a man who lived in Knightsville with his
father and brother is listed as occupation "pa", and it says he can't read,
can't write and can't speak English, although his father and brother can. I
think, but can't be 100% sure, that he was a miner who lost his eyes in a
mine accident and died in 1906. So what would the "pa" be? There is
absolutely no connection to Pennsylvania, and back then they didn't write it
that way anyway. Has anyone else seen this designation? I looked at an
official 1900 census site, but it didn't help on this. I have hunches, but
would like to hear from someone who has seen this designation in regard to
someone else and can make a judgement as to what was meant.
I will check the Mines and Miners notebook at CCGS Library and see if there
is any mention of this mine. Please email me privately and I will add your
query to the book. I need your address to add to the query.

Shirley,
First I would like to know what your relationship to the Grinslade family is? I would like to see if there is a connection. Ofcourse there has to be because this is such an uncommon name.
I don't recognise the name that you have mentioned and I am not where I can look at what we have from the Family Bible. If you will look on the message board, type in Grinslade on all boards you will find messages unrelated to Grinslades, but sent by Gail Grinslade. Gail is my cousins wife and you can contact him, Robert A. Grinslade (Bob). He has the Bible and can look for you and see if he can help you find her.
I loook forward to hearing more from you in the future. 'Rena
A 1905 obituary in the Clay County Enterprise states: "Francis J. Nichols,
34 years old, died Sunday at his home here from injuries which he received
in a mine at Grant nine years ago."
I believe this man was the son of Thomas F. McNicol/McNichol/ McNicholls,
who lived in Knightsville.
Any idea where the Grant is that it refers to? Is there a mine named Grant?

I don't have much information on the Grinslade family. However, I do have Mary Jane Grinslade b. 07 Feb 1830, married 03 Aug 1847 to Benjamin Malone Culver.
I would be very interested in any information you have on her ancestors which I have had no success with. I would be very interested in copies of the bible of which you mention. I will be willing to pay for copies, postage etc.
Let me know if you would like additional information on her and her descendants.
