Hi Doris,
I have an Elizabeth Stough who married my Henry Johnson in Holmes Co., OHIO
in 1830's and they came to Putnam Co., IN in 1839 or 1840. I think perhaps
some of her family came to IN also. There were Stoughs living in Putnam Co
after that. And I believe they were of the same line.
Let me know if you want more info. I have little though on the Stough line.
You might be able to help me though.

If Robert Reynolds had died, a guardian would have been appointed for his

I am looking for the birth of Alice Anna Bell abt 1860. I do not know who
her parents were. I was told she was born in Vigo Co, but do not know for
sure. Any help out there? Thanks. Carol
Carol, yes lots of records were lost in a fire but be persistent. Even
so, they may have reconstructed records based on units rosters, orders,
etc.
It helps if you declare you are RESEARCHING MEDICAL HISTORY OF FAMILY.
I have had to go back three times in one case and finally got a pretty
good reconstructed record.
Assume you are using other avenues, other than official records. May
units, like Bomb Groups, have associations and have large amount of
official records they have assembled from military historical files.
What service was your Uncle in?

No expert here! However at that time, the husbands became naturalized and
she and all children became citizens, I think. I would assume he was of
foreign birth.

I would be most interested in your proofs regarding Mahalia and her parents. James is a new one to me and another research challenge. Did he, perhaps, die young? She has been on the Samuel Taylor Coffelt family list for some time. I'll have to check my sources. Do you need information regarding Samuel Taylor and his family? I am eager to clarify this and will be glad to share what I have. Idonna

I show Samuel Taylor COFFELT b: 24 Jan 1847 as the son of Samuel COFFELT and Lucy REYNOLDS. Mahala COFFELT is the daughter of James COFFELT and Nancy HICKS. After James died in 1838, Nancy Hicks COFFELT is found in 1840 living next door to Samuel COFFELT. I am still trying to prove the relationship between Samuel and James. Samuel is said to be the son of James H. COFFELT and Sarah WYATT. Happy to share proofs. dfaeander(a)aol.com

Thanks for the obituary. She was the sister of my husband's grandfather, Samuel Taylor Coffelt. I'm trying, usually in vain, to fill the gaps on the siblings of Mahalia and Samuel. Is there anything I can share with you?
Bill,
That column applies to all persons in the household. From the National Archives site:
The 1820 census reported the number of "Foreigners not naturalized" in each household; the 1830 census reported the number of "ALIENS--Foreigners not naturalized" in each household. For example, the 1820 census for Geauga County, Ohio, reported that these households included aliens:
Name Number of Aliens Township
Thomas Ainslee 2 Parkman
Francis Bark 1 Painesville
Francis Billette 3 Painesville
John Graham 2d 1 Perry
Abel Levins 1 Parkman
Although these censuses do not specify which person or persons in the household were aliens, this clue should alert the researcher (1) to search for known household members in immigration records, (2) to be alert to clues in other records that point to the suspected immigrant's possible foreign origins, and (3) to search for possible later naturalization records for the suspected immigrant. Unfortunately, however, there are relatively few ship passenger lists (immigration records) before January 1, 1820, when the Federal Government began requiring such lists to be presented to collectors of customs.
This can be found at www.nara.gov/genealogy/oldclues.html
Also, from an article written by Myra Vanderpool Gormley entitled, "Understanding Census Records" copyright 2000:
"The 1820 census presents some other possible pitfalls if you don't understand the questions that were asked. Under "Free White Males" there is a breakdown by ages: under 10, 10-16, 16-18, 16-26; 45-up. Those listed in the 16-18 column were also included in the 16-26 column. So you may have assumed there were additional young males in the family if you are not aware of this. Persons whose usual place of abode on the first Monday of August in 1820 was in another family were not to be included. The name of every person having no settled place of residence was to be inserted in the column of the scheduled allotted for heads of families in the division where such person shall be on the first Monday of August. In 1830 the enumeration began as of the first day of June."
Her article can be found at www.genealogymagazine.com/uncenrec.html

Got a question. Reading the 1820 census, I have a household with 3 males under 10, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10 and under sixteen, 1 female 26-45 and one male 26-45. In the last column it identifies 1 "foreigner, not naturalized". Now you have to assume that the children would be excluded from this category since there is only one. For purposes of this discussion, let us also assume that the older two are man and wife. Does the naturalization column only apply to the male or could the non-naturalized person be the wife?
Any experts out there?
Bill Strahle
I don't know if the Kirkwoods went to Owen Co or Unionville IN.
I am not aware of my Williams line being in IN.
The Williams line is from TX from MS and VA
Were your Williams in those places?
