Uriah Ashley and Sarah Jane Hancock were married in Clay County on 1-20-1881. I know Sarah (born 3/13/1863) was from Clay County and her parents were Zimri and Nancy Presnell Hancock. The Hancock's moved from Raleigh, NC. I have no record of Sarah's siblings. Also were the Ashleys from Clay County? Uriah and Sarah both died in Vermillion County.
Hi,
Can someone help me? I am looking for information on Joseph Rockhill and Lucinda (Sampson) Rockhill, his wife. They were married Aug. 8 1875 in Clay County. Their children were W.E., Arthur, Mabel, Howard and Luella Rockhill. Lucinda was the daughter of John J. Sampson and Mary Elizabeth Hock. Lucinda was born Oct. 30, 1856, died Oct. 31, 1929 and lived her entire life in the Brazil area. Joseph was born about 1851 and pasted away before Lucinda. I suspect they are buried in Clay Co. I know that she passed away there. I would be interested in any information, but specifically I need Joseph's date of death and the cemetery where they are buried. thanks.

John,
Do you have any more info on Victoria DeBarge and Charles Molle. My great grandfather Charles Molle lived across the river from Louisville in Indiana. He died in 1910. He is buried in Cave Hill in Louisville. He may have had a son Charles. Do we have a possible match?
Thanks
Charles Molle Johnston

For those who are interested--The Clay Genealogical Society is going to
reprint the 1884 HISTORY of CLAY COUNTY by Charles Blanchard later this

don't send any orders just yet.

The Church of Christ just moved from From Lena to Long corner road and us
40 about four miles east of Brazil. then they is another church but not
sure if it is Methodist , Baptist, or Presp.--- Names in Lena that I
remember would be Thomas , Reinoel, Johnson, Bell, Thompson, and maybe
Trotter.

Is that why then some census shows Parke Co and others Clay? that would
make sense. I had thought the county line changed making the town in
different counties.

Here is what Travis has to say about the town of "Marysville"
MARYVILLE.
Maryville, a town in the northeast corner of the county, in Van
Buren township, on the Indianapolis & St. Louis Railroad, laid out by
Mary Wyatt, in 1870, so named for herself. Though a separate town plat,
this place is, practically, that part of the town of Lena lying on the south
side of the railroad and in Clay county, Lena proper being in Parke
county. The business houses at this point and postoffice have all along
been on the north side of the county line.

I have a map of Van Buren Township. CO RD 1500N runs east and west along the
county line. Lena appears to be lying on Both side of the County Line along
both sides of the railroad. Carbon is about 4 miles west and 1 mile south of
Lena. I think persons living in all 3 counties in that area have a Lena
address. Depending on which county the home is in may determine whether the
911 system is functioning. The town is in Section 2 in the very northeast
corner.
Mary
are you talking about Lena Indiana and not Cardonia - -- Lena is in parke
county or at least that is what county the property taxes are paid in and
the car tags. in Parke Co. 61 prefix.

Oh, thank you very much! May I ask, has your family been in the Lena, Clay
Co. area for many years?? Can you tell me what churches are in Lena today?
Do you know of any families that have been in the area of Lena going back
to the late 1800's or early 1900's???? Thank you for allowing me to pick
your brain. Feel free to e-mail me Marian Jackson Cary
Marla,
I haven't been up to speed and have missed the discussion on Clay Co History
Book. Is there index? I am seeking information on a STITT family - George d
between 1850 and 1860.....young child also d during that time frame. Anything
at all on any Stitt's? Thans, Norma
I Have that book and the entry you are referring to is a chapter listing
death notices. It reads:
Angleton, Samuel, October 11, 1892-26
Name, Date of death, and age at death (not a page number)

Lena, is in Clay county. It used to be a pretty active little town. Today,
it only has 2-maybe 3 churhes. Up until around 1975-80 it had the general
store/gas station and a barber shop. It is only 3 or maybe 4 miles from
Carbon. To look at it today you would not realize how important it was
to the many farmers around there. Lena is in the North East corner of Clay
county-Putnam and Park counties are VERY near it. Our family farm is about
3 miles away. Lena had a post office in it-but it was closed before I was
born, or, before I remembered it--so before 1955 or there abouts. William

I am assuming that this part of Clay and Parke has not had the 911 address
change? You are quoting a RR address.
I also noticed it called Marysville. Anyone know why it was called that??
I also have relatives that came from this section of the country so I am
interested too. Muriel
