Hi Pat: Our Hannah Sparks was born about 1813 and her son Alexander Smith about 1832. I do not have any parents for her. I have her marriage date as March 21, 1831, and do not have a location listed for her marriage to Anthony Sparks. Do you have any idea where your Sparks and Smiths were born and married? I know that Lavina's father is listed as being born in Indiana and her mother was born in Ohio. Haven't gotten to Terre Haute to see any of the cemeteries etc. and am just getting some of the names of my husbands lines. I just know that it seems a big coinsidence that so many of the same names are in both family lines. We have other names in Clay County listed in your surnames too like Jeffers, and Frakes but that is on the Haughee side of his family. Be great if we can connect somewhere and watch our puzzles fill in . Thanks Kaye

I have an Hannah Sparks, b. abt. 1842 in Indiana. She is the daughter of Preston Sparks and Rachel Ann McCray. Would this be the Hannah that Kaye is referring to? My mother's maiden name was Sparks and I have a long Sparks line that came to IN from KY. Would appreciate hearing from you.

You have an interesting family tree. We have common names all over the place . We have a Hanna Sparks married to Anthony Smith and they had a son Alexander who married his cousin Lavina Smith and her parents were John Wilkison Smith and Mary Ann Tryon. Some were born in Ky. and some in Ohio but were all in Vigo Co. Indiana at the end of their lives. Lavina and Alexander had Mary Alice Smith who married Frances Marion Stark in Vigo County. One of their daughters Mary Lena Stark married a Harry McGranahan and they lived in Marian Heights, Vigo County. They had three children Mary May, Ralph, and Ramond. Lena died between 1928 and 1931. She was alive when her mother died but dead when her father died. I have found so far no trace of Harry since then. I have a picture of the children when they were in grade school. Could any of these people be connected with your group in Clay County? Thanks Kaye

Hi,
I'll be sure and let you know if I find anything more, know what you mean about getting into this family tree business, a person can get addicted to it, I have only been doing it for a couple of months, but I am really hooked on it, besides it is really interesting, I am at a dead end on my husbands grandfather, who came over from Germany in 1894, but I have sent a couple of letters over to Germany so maybe I'll find out something there. There are a lot of times I don't find anything but when I do , everybody knows it. Well good luck and keep in touch.

Hi, glad to be of any help that I can. Working on this family tree thing is an escape for me and so much fun. The more you learn the more you want to know. Made arrangements in our business to share weekly duties. Gonna work 3 days a week now instead of 6 (not getting any younger here) and plan on delving into this full force again. Will let you know if I find anything interesting. Janice T.

Hi Donna,
My g-grandfather, James Wiley Chance, Jr. was born in Marion Co. I don't
show any of the surnames that you listed, but would be interested in their
connection to the Chances. James had 1 daughter, Rosella. My grandfather
was Alvin Charleton, also born in Marion Co. This is all that I know about
his siblings. Waiting to hear from you again. Have a good one!

Thank you Dick, for your offer of translation. That is not the problem. The problem is connecting the dots in my family tree. For your info and as a result of your your gracious response, the German Harrises came from the Palentine and were the mid northern European branch of the original Harries that split out of France in the Holy Roman Empire days while the "English" Harrieses just kept going and crossed the channel and became Scotch(English). In German, I think you will find that Harris can be spelled-Harris/Harrif/Harrafz, just to name a few. But again, thank you for your offer and who knows, maybe some of those "thought-to-be" English Harrises from Terre Haute are really part of my German Harrises that married in the late 1800's and didn't only stop in Owen County but kept going to Vigo. I have a cousin in Vigo County who can trace herself back to our common ancestors who were brothers in PA with a VERY German father and mother. Even MY Grandfather and Grandmother spo!
ke German at home. Hope this helps, and thanks again for your response, Fred
