Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Marybeth has just volunteered to transcribe the remaining pages(21, 22 &
23) , that takes care of pages 17 thru 24. Heather has just sent pages 25
thru 34 and I have just up-loaded them so if you want to transcribe any of
the new pages let me know.

Currently working on Clay County ancestors of the McNicol family, who came
to Clay County around 1869. In Clay County records the names are spelled
MANY ways. Francis McNicol, (Listed as McNicholls on the naturalization
intent record) born in Scotland, sailed to the United States from Glasgow in
July 1869, and eventually came to Clay County. He was a grocer in
Knightsville, married to Sarah McGuire. His brother Thomas spelled his name
differently. My line is: Francis McNicol, married to Bridget Conners
McNicol, both of them born in Ireland. Their daughter Mary McNicol, born in
Belfast Ireland on January 8, 1853, married Barnard Martin, born in
Scotland. They were married June 1, 1871 in Clay County. Their children
were: Rosa McNicol McForan, Veronica McNicol Caren (sp?); Mary McNicol
Martin, Thomas McNicol, and Frank McNicol. So we have two generations named
Frank McNicol or Francis McNicol. I have found nothing to show me that
Frank Sr. was in this country with his family.
I also have no info on Rosa McNicol McForan or Veronica McNicol
Caren/Corwin/Corwen.
These names came from Bridget McNichol's obituary. When she died in 1901,
the obit said she came from Ireland to Clay County over forty years ago.
Some of the McNicols, however you care to spell it, moved to Indianapolis
and Chicago.
If anyone recognizes any of these names, or wants to ask about someone not
mentioned here, please contact me. Thanks!

I saw the reply from Nancy Stone, who say's she is from the Ohio Genealogy
Society. I would like to contact her if possible. I have people born in
Highland Conty Ohio, that I would like to try to get some information on,
but I don't know how to contact her. I don't think the E mail message is her
E mail address. If you could help me I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

I'm happy to report that my earlier rant of today generated a very quick
response from the Ohio Genealogical Society that contained more accurate
information. Thanks to Nancy Stone of OGS for responding so quickly. It
looks like an amendment has been proposed to remove the language restricting
access to maiden names. For those concerned about this issue, here's more
complete information from Nancy, below.

Hello Jilliane,
This is a direct reply to you questioning the Ohio House Bill 519-Mother's
Maiden Name. I am a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society and received
this notice in the January 2000 Newsletter, Volume XXX1, Number 1, Page 1.
Editor: Sundra Anderson Peters. E-mail: ogs(a)ogs.org
Quoting the article dated January 2000:
"State Representative Bryan C. Williams, Republican, of Akron, introduced

genealogists. If the reader has access to the Internet, go to The 123rd Ohio

"UPDATE ON HOUSE BILL 519
Senator Dick Schafrath has written to inform me that an amendment to H.B.
519 was to be offered in Committee (House Civil and Commercial Law) on
January 26, 2000, retracting the provision that removes the mother's maiden
name from the marriage certificate. The web site information has not yet

I hope this helps many to understand this issue. The original poster should
have added sources for their information.

Hello list members searching Ohio records for marriage information:
This comes from the April 2000 Mahoning County Chapter of the OGS
newsletter: "Introduced into the Ohio House of Rep. is a bill to amend the
Ohio Revised code that should have genealogists up in arms. 'It states, in
part, that upon receiving a request for records pertaining to the issuance of
marriage licenses, a probate court shall furnish copies of the records as
provided under section 149.43 of the Ohio Revised code, except that the court
shall delete or otherwise remove any social security numbers and the maiden
names of the mothers of the parties to a marriage so that they are not
available to the person requesting the records, except for use by the
department of human services, law enforcement personnel, and if ordered by
the court in a civil or criminal trial.' If any individual genealogist feels
that this would impact their ability to do genealogical research, a letter
voicing your concern would be in order here. The address is: The
Honorable____, Ohio Representatives, 77 South High St., Columbus, Ohio
43266-0603. Or www.house.state.oh.us/voice/index. html. Representative Ron
Hood from Canfield is a co-sponsor of this bill."
Pass this on to any other lists you are subscribed to if you think others
might also be seeking marriage information in Ohio records.

Talked with our ISP provider and got squared away.... something to do with UUNET and translation of the DNS server.... so we access for now using 216.10.103.21 which is Ancestry's actual address.
Thanks for your comments and help..

Anyone here used the Ancestry.com web site since they revamped it a couple of days ago? We can no longer access the site at all and am wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. When we go to the home page, it still tells us to "Come Back Soon" and links to pages inside the site give us the deadly HTTP 404 error.
