I saw in that Graves History that they also show Nancy Ann Smitherman as the
wife of John Graves, son of Samuel and Zilphia. He married Polly Smitherman.
Nancy Ann married Spencer Harbard, the rascal who along with his father
burned the Court House in Montgomery Co., NC and denied lots of us the
necessary means to prove our genealogy.

The Kendall's, Cagle's, and Comer's were aligned with the Orman/Auman family
also. So many of Clay County early residents, the South part especially,
came from the Randolph, Moore, Montgomery and Guilford Counties in North
Carolina. Parts of those many families continued to come into the area.
John Graves and his wife Polly Smitherman came in 1827. Both of their
parents had been slave owners in the Southwest corner of Randolph Co., NC.

Thank you for responding. I am actually researching my Melton family. I
don't think they moved to Clay County, but I don't know. I have found them
in Greene, Martin, Lawrence and my ancestors moved from Martin to Parke
County. I think the Nora Melton who married Andrew J. Vest in Greene County
is in my line. I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about them.
There were lots of Vests in Greene County.
Thanks,
Carla

Surname: Carter, Helton, Lewis, Muncie
-------------------------
I just received the obituaries for James Lewis and Laura Lewis Lybarger
as printed in the Terre Haute Trib. Neither reveal a whole lot.James died
in Cabin Creek W VA. and was sent back to his daughter, Mrs Fred Stearley
of Brazil. Laura died 9/6/1949 and is buried in Union cemetery. She was
survived by her daughter Mrs. Pete Underwood and sons Grover, Clem, Dave
and Albert, 32 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. Does anyone know
where I could check to see if there are divorce record James and Laura.
I am assuming there was one since James was living in W VA. There is no
mention of his wife Laura in his obituary, or any of his other children.
Was she with him in W Va.? It doesn't sound like it.
what age bracket.

While we are talking about people coming to Clay County,
many of my families came from Knox County Kentucky.
MUNCY, HELTON, BULLOCK, DAVENPORT, et al. Seems
as if there were large groups of people from 3 or 4 areas
that were the early settlers of Clay County?
H. Wayne Green
Many Tennesseans also came to Clay County. All over the country, people
who were kindred related or intermarried or just neighbors moved together.
It's a fact.

That's a question I've asked also. You've got Luther, Cole, Orman, Peter
Luther's wife was a Randall, Samuel the son of Jacob Luther was married to
Dovey Green in Randolph Co, did any of her kin make it to Clay Co? Of course,
Michael the son of Jacob Luther was married to Fannie Graves in Randolph.
thomas Luther son of Jacob was married to Martha Bingham abt 1820 in probably
Randolph Co--any Binghams make it to Clay co?
Christian Luther and all his sons were in the Lawrence Co, IN, area in 1820,
but the children had bought land in Clay by 1830. You might also want to know
that one contingent of the Luther family settled in Dickson Co, TN, by 1840,
and I found a Michael Luther in Gallatin Co, IL, by 1830 that I feel sure is
one of this bunch, there is a Graves living next door to him. There are of
course a number of Luther/Graves connections in Randolph Co.
Hello,
Have you ever heard of Andrew J. Vest that married Nora Melton in
Greene Co., Indiana, 12 Oct 1879?
Thanks,
Carla
