Hi to all. I am new to the Clark Co. IN list.
I hope to be in Clark Co. in early December and would like to make the most of my limited
time in the area. The more I can learn before I get there the better.
I am researching the family of my gg grandfather, Edmund I. DAVIS who lived in New Market,
Oregon Twp. and then Charlestown between the years 1853 - 1862. He was listed in the 1860
census as a produce dealer.
After his death during the Civil War, his widow, Martha NORTH DAVIS married Francis
'Frank' M. McCUNE in 1865.
Two of Edmund Davis's minor children were adopted out to other families.
(1) One child was my great grandfather, Delos Bligh DAVIS, b. 1855. He was adopted by two
doctors - Dr.Vincent D. JACKSON and Dr.Sarah COLLINS JACKSON of Jeffersonville, IN.
sometime after 1867.
(2) The other child was Melvina S. DAVIS, b. 1853. She was living in the home of George
W. SEE of Charlestown in 1862. This may be the George W. SEEK (farmer) listed in the 1860
Clark Co. census.
Other Clark Co. names connected to my Davis family:
William and Hannah DAVIS of Charlestown. (Edmund's brother)
William A. and Florence DUNN DAVIS of Utica. (Edmund's son)
Augustus M. DAVIS, b. 1843 VA (relative)
Mary Ellen EGAN, age 17 (living in Davis household in 1860)
Edward G. GREEN (friend of the family)
Paulina and Amelia GOODWIN (friends of the family)
Capt. Warren HORR, MD (friend, family doctor, and commanding officer)
If anyone is researching any of these names or has information that might help me in my
research, I hope to hear from you.
Thank you,
Vicki in Terre Haute, IN
