Dear List,
We are finding the same problem here in Berrien County, Michigan. Our local Genealogical
Society is reading the cemeteries to update their books and we are finding cemeteries that
were there 20 years ago are gone or have dropped into private hands of people who
don't care. Michigan does have laws that state that private cemeteries have to be
maintained, but there just is the interest in most local law emforcment who care. We are
watching as slowly groups are coming out to help clean-up and maintain the cemeteries and
also watching as a local farm plants peach trees into a cemetery on his property. If a
stone gets in his way it is dumped on the rumble pail he has, the gentleman who is mowing
the cemetery just sets the stones back up, after repairing them, but like he says it's
not over the grave anymore.
Okay, why I started these letter, please for give the soap box... I'm hoping someone
in Clark County has seen the graves of family (or an information) of William O. and
Mildred S. (Breeden) Williams. Mildred I know was in Illinois in 1880 with her son James
Mack Williams. I do not know anything other than William and Mildred were in the 1860
census with all of their know children, including a married daughter, (known as Aunt Emma
to my grandmother), her husband and a child.
Thank you,
