I would like to welcome each of you to the INCASS-L list. It was time that
someone take the responsibility of monitoring the list. Since nobody
stepped forward and I'm already very involved with Cass County genealogy
and history, I decided that person must be me... I do hope that we will
all help each other. Right now we have over a dozen subscribers. Please
feel free to post questions here about Cass County ancestors or history.
I have been sponsoring the Cass Co INGenWeb pages for the past 3 years.
Most of you are probably familiar with the website, but if you are not or
you haven't visited in awhile, please stop by when you get the chance. I
added a new search engine to the site and it makes a site index which may
help you in navigating the site. I just added Patterson Cemetery, Jackson
Twp. last night, so it will not be indexed on the search engine yet.
I had a busy day today. My friend and colleague and distant cousin, Becky
Miller and I went driving around looking at three Cass County Cemeteries
that we were not familiar with. We both have an interest in pioneer
cemeteries and their restoration. Also, we are fascinated by the lovely
art and craftsmanship of some of these grave markers. The three that we
visited were McNeeley Church Cemetery (this one is not on the list on my
website yet), Onward/Thomas Little (west of Onward), and Odd Fellows of New
Waverly. We saw some really awesome tombstones and took some photos. They
were taken with a film camera and there are still several shots left, but
after they are developed, I will be scanning them for a webpage.
We also spent some time at the courthouse in the Auditor's and Recorder's
office. We were trying to get information about ownership of some
cemeteries. We talked for quite awhile to the Jackson Twp trustee,
Christine Lawson about the condition and ownership of the cemeteries in her
jurisdiction. She seems interested in having restoration help and even put
forth the possibility of using labor of prisoners on work-release or people
needing to serve community service.
We have been reading Sprinkle Cemetery, but it has become very time
consuming, because we keep finding buried markers. We have been stopping
to dig them up and stand them up when we are able. Some are just too heavy
or in too many pieces.
If anyone is interested in getting involved, let me know.
