My MONEHAN connection to Logansport is through my grandfather's first family.
Although I am not directly related to the MONEHANs, I'm researching them to
see if any descendants exist who can share info with me about my grandfather's
life in Logansport from 1902 - 1919. I have seen the MONEHAN name spelled in
several different ways, and I do not know if the mayor you mention is a
descendant of this family.
1903 January 20: Patrick Francis FITZGIBBON married Anna Marie BYRNE in
Logansport, Cass County. Patrick had a saloon at 1201-1203 Erie (the building is
still there). He later moves his business across the street to 1139 Erie
occupied for many years as POLSINELLI's.
1904: Patrick and Anna have a daughter Mary Ann.
1906 May 17: Wife Anna dies of tuberculosis and daughter Mary Ann is sent to
live with her mother's sister's family nearby. (James L. MONEHAN and Adelia
BYRNES MONEHAN). The MONEHAN's have a son John and daughters Marguerite and
Anna Marie according to census records.
1910 Census: Patrick is a widower whose widowed mother is living with him at
the 1201 Erie business. Daughter Mary Ann FITZGIBBON is living with her
MONEHAN relatives nearby.
1915 April 10: Patrick marries Sarah RYAN (my maternal grandmother) in
Chicago, and brings her and her widowed mother Catherine RYAN to live in Logansport.
By then Patrick has the 1139 Erie saloon, and all four live in the apartment
above the business there. (both mothers die in 1916)
1920 Census: Prohibition caused Patrick and Sarah to close their business and
relocate to Chicago where they begin a grocery and meat market in the
Englewood neighborhood. They have 15 year old Mary Ann with them who works as a clerk
in the store. Patrick and Sarah have a daughter (my mother) in 1923 and a
son in 1926. James and Adelia MONEHAN are in Chicago at this time, as well.
Adelia dies in 1930, James in 1949 -- both are buried in Logansport at Mt.
Hope/St. Vincent -- along with son John and his wife Lavon. Perhaps John and Lavon
had children, but I have no further research at this time.
1922: Mary Ann FITZGIBBON marries George SMITH; they have 3 daughters who I
remember meeting when I was a child -- they were my half-cousins, but the same
age as my mother. Mary and George are also buried in Logansport, next to Anna
Marie BYRNE FITZGIBBON, Mary's mother.
If anyone on the list has info on this MONEHAN/BYRNE family, I would
appreciate hearing from them.
