You can get tile probes at any plumbing supply place,
they have rounded metal tips and I doubt they do much
damage to the stone. It's a great tool for finding
sunken stones and also for finding bases. If a stone
breaks off and the base sinks you may have no idea
where they stone was originally located, you can use a
tile probe to find the base.

My uncle, Lee Morris, was sexton of Mt. Hope for
quite awhile. He told me
he had a special auger type tool made and had found
stones imbedded in
the ground with it. I wonder that the auger did to
the stone. He was
