My wife`s mother graduated from Bottineau, ND high school at age 22 in 1920. She had to
move into the city from the farm that was 60 miles away, and work until she could aquire
enough to allow her to pay board while she returned to school, and after that to college
at Minot State Normal, which she graduated from in 1925 at age 27. In those days if it
came between farming and school, the farm won out. Many could go to school only during the
winter as they were needed for the spring planting, taking care of the livestock and
whatever building was needed in the summer, and the fall harvest. Didn`t do you much good
to be able to read if you were out of food.
Many in those days considered a 8th grade education to be sufficient, but that education
was far superior to what we have today, as is evident in the 1895 test.

Looking over several online files of FULTON COUNTY INDIANA SCHOOL
ENUMERATIONs I noticed some were still attending school when they were
20. Thought that was somewhat strange, but after reading what students
had to know to pass the "Eighth Grade Test--1895" posted to the Cass Co
email list on 13 Nov 2003, it's no wonder.... think what must have been
ask on the "Twelfth Grade Test!"
P.S. For anyone that doesn't know, Fulton County Public Library has a
LOT of genealogy info online. Their main webpage is at
http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/genealogy/fulcogenealogyfrontpage.htm
These online files have helped us piece together some of the collateral
lines related to our BROWNs who branched out from Van Buren Twp, Pulaski
Co, IN.
