Hi Lena,.
I have the American Legion paper but there is nothing on it as far as
Company, etc. I have the 1930 Census where he says he was a WW Vet. I
even filled out the cem. papers, picked out stone I want to match his 2
brothers, etc.. It was sent in-Washington said they didn't have it. The
head of Vets in Logansport has been trying to help me. It is so
frustrating to be so far away. I send filled out forms to every address I
can find-even Indy has tried to help. I do know about the fire. He and
his brothers did not enlist in Indiana. I thought Michigan but can't get
anything from them either. The youngest brother was killed in Battle of
Argonne Forest and is buried at Mt. Hope-all 3 are there along with their
mother. I got one brother's monument in 2000 so 3 went, 2 are honored the
third isn't. If I was up there I would buy a stone from Caldwell's and
have them inscribe it.
I didn't realize the Library would help. They were always so against
helping we Genealogists when I lived in Logansport. I finally just
stopped bothering them. I donated my McConnaughhay Family Record Book to
them in 80's. It isn't there altho Mr. S. found it in the old card
catalogue. I guess someone took it.
Is Cass Co Gen Society in existance? I heard they disbanded. I was a
member in early 80's. Sallie

I don't think there are any volunteers doing obit
lookups but you can contact the library and they can
get the obit for you.

If the government is not willing to accept the note
from the funeral director then chances are they are
may not accept the obit either. Often the info from
the obit came fromt he funeral director. His records
most likely really were lost in St. Louis. They had a
massive fire years ago and many records were lost. If
the American Legion is placing a flag on his grave
then they are probably the ones you should be
contacting to get proof of his service. Obviously they
have it or they wouldn't be putting a flag on his
grave. I'm sure they would be happy to help you if you
contacted them.
Good luck!
