I am researching the family of James and Catherine Doyle MORRISSEY (or MORRISY, MORRISSY,
MORSEE, etc. as the name has been spelled a number of ways in the records I have found.
James and Catherine were born in County Wexford Ireland in the early 1800s and immigrated
through New Orleans in 1846, I have a copy of James declaration of intent from Cass
County. Also those of Michael and Martin. It appears the other boys may not have become
citizens.
In the 1860 census they were living in Pulaski County but the name was spelled MORSEE.)
James 50 M Farmer Ireland
Catherine 40 F "
James 21 M Farming "
Michael 18 M Day L "
John 16 M Farming "
Martin 12 M "
Edward 5 M Illinois
Their oldest daughter, Catherine, is listed as 23 in this census and she married Patrick
QUINLAN in 1859 and the license is in Cass County not Pulaski.
I also know from death records that the MORRISSEY family moved back to Cass County, the
Logansport area to be specific.
James Morrissey, died December 23, 1877 and is listed as the father of Capt. Morrissey of
police and as over 80. Michael Morrissey is listed in the as chief of police of
Logansport in the Directory on the Cass GenWeb site.
Catherine Doyle Morrissey died March 9, 1892 at age 81and lived on Race St., Logansport.
She is listed as spouse of James and buried in St. Vincent Cemetery. The informants were
Martin and Michael Morrissey.
Edward Morrissey died May 9 1894 at age 39 and lived at 826 Race St.
James Morrissey died January 10, 1890 at age 55 and lived at 831 Race St., Logansport.
The informants were Martin and Michael Morrissey.
John Morrissey died September 20, 1921 at age 70 and lived at 831 Race St., Logansport.
Parents are listed as James Morrissey and Catherine Doyle and brother as Michael
Morrissey.
Bridget Deegan (or Dugan as listed in the marriage index) Morrissey, wife of Michael, died
April 29, 1929, age 73 and was born in NY. Her parents were Michael Deegan and Mary
Corcoran both from Ireland.
I have the information on Catherine Morrissey and Patrick Quinlan as these are my g
grandparents. I am looking for information on the other brothers. It appears to me that
it could be likely that as I can find marriage information on only two of them and both of
these records show them to have married late in life, there may be no offspring from any
of the five Morrissey brothers.
I would think there would be some more information on the chief of police (Michael
Morrissy) and I would like to know the date of death and perhaps a copy of the obituary.
