Hello Francine,
I posted a note to the INCASS list last night but I havent seen it show
up yet so dont know where it went.
Anyway, I think we corresponded a while back on your Conns and my Burkets.
Included is copy of my post to INCASS list RE: Burket Cemetery.
I havent been there since July 2004, but my cousins who went to place
the marker last summer
said the landowner is keeping it mowed and it was very nice. Weedkiller
had been applied and the
poison ivy was under control, so it was looking better. We usually drive
in and knock at the house
to visit with them, then go just around beyond the metal barn and the
site is on a little hill just at the
edge of the woods. Nice people, but they dont want a whole bunch of
stranger trooping across their
land looking for the cemetery. We also made friends with their neighbor
across the field who has
the record book from the original cemetery with notes on the
organizatiion of the church that
eventually became the Crooked Creek Christian Church located a mile
north and a little back west.
Many of the Burkets and Lefevers are buried there. Guess the original
church was located on the same
land as the cemetery after being held in Solomon Burket's house for
several years. Lots of interesting
local history. Somewhere I have a copy of the minutes that I copied from
the church recordbook, but
I havent looked at them for a looooong time.
What else can I help with?

Yes, the Burket Cemetery certainly does exist., but not in admirable
condition.
Located 1/8th mile back a private lane at the edge of the landowners
barnyard, it
sits atop a little knoll, surrounded by thicketed woods. All of the
discovered stones
are lying flat on the ground and were previously completely buried under
dirt and
debris. When we spoke two years ago, the landowner told me he had probed
the ground when he
bought the land several years previous, unearthed the stones and
situated them flat
on the ground where he had found them. There are only seven or eight
readable stones,
several pieces of stones and I believe 3 stones with initials only.
As a project for the Burket Family Reunion, descendants of Solomon and
Sarah Burket's
eldest son, David and wife Susannah McDowell, visited the site with the
landowner's permission
to take pictures and discuss restoration and marking the cemetery. He
was at that time
reluctant to allow any sign at the road indicating the location, but he
did give permission for
a marker to be set in cement at the edge of the cemetery that reads
Burket Cemetery 1846.
He also was agreeable to fencing it off when the boundaries could be
established and our family
group offered compensation and assistance in mowing and keeping the
forest and weeds at bay.
Further, we have contacted the trustee for assistance in locating the
boundaries and are still
waiting for a reply. Hopefully, this summer more can be accomplished by
a larger group of descendants
of the Solomon Burket family. So, glad to contact you Francine and
others to get a working group
established. Please email me privately if you have an interest in the
photos I have made of the stones.
They are very weather-worn and difficult to read.

Hello Shirley & the rest of the Cass Co. List.
Thank you so much for the great description on the status of the Burket
Cemetery. I have known for years that Rhoda Burket & her sister Susan married John
Francis Conn (my 1st cousin 3 times removed) was buried there but I really
never knew much about the Burkets & then I saw it this past week and decided to
send an email. The Conns were all over the Cass & Pulaski counties but I have
yet to find anyone (desendant or a connection of any kind in either counties)
to help me. I took a chance on the Burket clue and found you!
Yes, I would very much like to see the photos, no matter how poorly they are.
Below are 3 generations of desendants from Solomon Burket that I have. As you
can see, I know very little about the Burkets but since they married my Conn,
I'm interested in learning more about them AS WELL AS my Conn family.
