Sallie,
At the point I started going to meetings, there was
not much going on. Barbara Wolf had given up on the
society at that point. She passed away a year or so
ago. Hardy Songer was a kind old gentleman. He came
to meetings occasionally, although he was on oxygen
that he had to carry with him. As you said, he has
passed away. He was kind of a stablizing force while
he was still living. There was a power struggle
between two women officers and they were not always
quiet and dignified about it. Meetings mainly
consisted of reading the mail and complaining about
the queries. For awhile they were actually answering
queries, but some were against doing that. Once they
had a surprise program on symbolism on grave markers.
It was a good and interesting program.
From the beginning, I tried to encourage them to have
some sort of program at each meeting, even if it was a
discussion topic that attendees could prepare for
ahead of time. I got very little cooperation. I was
driving an hour or more round trip to these meetings,
so it was getting tiresome.
On a positive note, I am involved with cemetery
restoration and they gave me a very generous donation
to help with that. I was sad that the society could
not be revived, but there didn't seem to be much one
person could do.

Deb, When I went to Cass Co in the early 80's I was
not welcomed. I
continued to go as I wanted to, not because THEY
wanted me to. A lady by
the name of Kay, finally came & befriended me.
Before this I would go
in, sit down, listen then leave and that was all.
But, I stuck it out.
There was a younger single fellow who was a little
friendly and then
Harley Songer. Kay trusted me. We did some kind of
old newspaper
compiling. I loved doing it but if not for Kay I
wouldn't have known
anything about it. I met Barbara Wolf at the Library
one time-she helped
me as I was trying to find the rightfull home of an
excellent OLD Bible
my great uncle gave my aunt. It belonged to his
wife. Barbara was very
knowledgeable. I don't know if she is still living.
I know Harley died.
Thanks for your kind words, Deb. Sallie
