Dear Dixie
I had turned my cp off for the night then decided to turn it back on and
found your note.
I live in San Benito, in the Rio Grande Valley 18 miles north of
Brownsville and Mexico. My husband got hurt on the railroad in 1982. He
couldn't get out in bad weather, couldn't shovel, or run snow blower so
we spent the winter of 1983 writing for info on places in the Valley to
stay in. We had lots of friends in Harlingen area. We picked a park at
Mercedes, lived there 3 months [went to Flordia for 1 month first]. Fall
of 1985, we came to San Benito and have been here ever since. We were in
one park for 2 seasons than crossed the little farm road to where I
presently live. Don died and was buried 9 years ago tomorrow. We were in
process of moving south. My uncle/brother pulled my RV down in the fall
of '96 and I left it here. After going back and forth I sold our property
at Deacon IN 5 years ago this summer. So here I am full fledged register
voter and all.
I met Mike when I went to Logansport last June. He is one swell person
and a credit to his job. The cem. is beautiful, well kept. Bad part is
they have had to shut the side roads with gates/bars as someone came in
and knocked one of the figures from the big War Memorial. If you have Mt
Hope site on Web there is a picture. The figure on the left was knocked
down, fence messed up and I think another one also or damaged. I forget
what the cost was to repair it. Just makes me sick to think there are
such people in this world.
Little over year ago IOOF got hit also Davis which is W of Logansport on
#24. Walton has substantial damage. They put their feet on the stones and
pushed them over. Over 100 were damaged, one our friends. Don's and none
of ours were. Tom was living then. [He was a nice guy, too. We knew his
parents and all his family, Jane's, too. I forget her maiden name off
hand] There is a monument company towards Kokomo from Walton-Caldwells.
Lots of the stones came from there as did ours and my folks. They came in
and in a short time with lots of volunteer help all was fixed. I think
the paper said they didn't charge one penny to do it. Now that is a fine
company, too.
I was never afraid to go to IOOF alone even tho it is on a country road.
There is a small golf course kattycorner across from it so I figured if I
ever got scared I would sure yell. Ha Ha.
I have never been to Nevada. My nephew got married there and last month
my cousin did, too.
Have a good day tomorrow. I am glad we got to 'meet'. Sallie
