CONN FAMILY: CASS COUNTY PIONEERS by Richard Copeland 'history buff'
The Conn family is one of the oldest families of Cass County. Several
Conn families moved to Cass County or Pulaski County from Bucks County,
PA. Many members of the family still reside in this area of Indiana.
Henry Conn, the earliest Conn of our Cass County line, was born and lived
in Bucks County, PA in 1762. He married Joanna Burt. They raised seven
children. The pioneering spirit must have been in the whole family. After
the children were grown and married, five of the Conn families moved to
Indiana.
Henry Conn Jr. was born June 17, 1792, in Bucks County. He grew up on a
farm and received very little education. The War of 1812 began, and Henry
enlisted. After the war, he returned home to the farm. He met and married
Elizabeth St. Clair of Lyconing County, PA in 1813. The had nine children
while still living in Bucks County. The family decided to seek a new home
in the wilderness of Indiana and arrived here in 1833. Henry settled on
an 80-acre plot of land that he received from the government for his
service in the War of 1812. This plot was in an area that would become
Harrison Township in 1836. They were one of the very first settlers in
this particular part of Cass County. Henry bought more land in 1837 that
was across the Harrison Township line in Boone Township. Henry died April
30, 1872, and was buried on the family farm. The burial site is lost and
is under cultivation at this time.
George Conn, Henry's son, was born in 1819 in Bucks County. He married
Catherine Long in 1839 and had two children. Catherine died and George
married Melissa Hendee. They had but one child before Melissa died.
George then married Helen Hendee and they had 10 children.
George had a farm in Boone Township. He built and operated the first
sawmill in Boone Township. The sawmill was operated with oxen that were
yoked to a wheel that moved the saw as they plodded around in a circle.
Andrew J. Conn, George's younger son, was born just three years before
his father's death. Andrew was educated in the Boone Township school. He
remained on the farm with his mother until he married Anna C. Humes Jan
4, 1882. They remained on the farm for three years, but decided to move
into Royal Center. Andrew ran a mercantile business for 25 years.
Andrew was a very astute businessman and carefully invested his profits
in property, both in farmland, 520 acres, and in property in Royal
Center. Andrew decided to retire after running the business for 25 years
and invested all of the profits from the sale in further property.
Andrew and Anna had eight children. Several of the children married and
continued to live in Cass County
Andrew belonged to the Elks Club in Logansport. He also belonged to the
Knights of Pythias, No. 462, located in Royal Center. He always voted as
a Democrat but was not active politically.
Andrew Conn died May 16 1920.
