Message Board Post:
I am searching for information on Robbins Livery located at the north east corner of
Franklin and Market streets. It was Swatts Livery and at some point had a name change to
Robbins Livery and possibly changed back to Swatts at a later time. It is my understanding
that Swatts operated from this location until the late 1920's, first as a livery then
as an automobile garage. My question is this, are there any Robbins family members who
still live in the Delphi area who may be able to shed some light on this. I have a pair of
photographs taken by "Barker" in Delphi and the name over the arched door
appears to read "Robbins Livery". I have located several photographs in the
Carroll Co., historical database that shows Swatts Livery. They all appear to be in the
same location except the photo taken in 1912, this does not appear to be the same building
which sits on the corner of Franklin and Market streets. Upon initial examination of this
other location, I initially assumed that!
the photo may have been taken from the rear of the building because there is not an
arched door, until closer examination shows a window in the back of the building that has
multiple panes of glass and all of the other photos of this building appear to have only
single panes rather than multiple panes. My great grandfather was born in Delphi in 1881
and by 1910 he was living in Missouri. My assumption is that these photos were taken
between 1905 and 1910. Thank you in advance for any information you may be able to
provide.
