Additional information has come to light with regard to this posting. Thanks to the
assistance of Ms. Bonnie Maxwell, Darilee Robbins and Nancy who placed me in contact with
Ms. Robbins.
After doing a bit more research I have determined that the Swatts did indeed sell the
livery to a Harvey Robbins. Evidence of this information can be found in the Deer Creek,
IN 1910 Federal census. It confirms Franklin Street as the enumeration address and records
that Harvey Robbins did indeed own the Livery Stable during 1910. When the 1912 Swatts
photo from the Carroll County Historical Society Database is compared to the building on
Franklin and Market it becomes very apparent these are different buildings. After close
inspection of the photo of 1912 a multi pane window can be seen through the building and
all of the other Swatts Franklin Street photos show only single glass panels not
multiples. I initially thought that the 1912 photo may have been taken from the rear of
the Franklin Street building but the multi pane window that shows through the interior of
the building removes any chance it is the Franklin Street building. I can only assume that
my initial estimate !
of 1905-1910 is reasonably accurate. I just though I would pass this along in case it
ever comes up again in the future.
After the frame building at the northeast corner of Franklin and Market, there was a brick
building installed in 1899. It is still standing, but has been dramatically remodeled
several times.
In an 1862 directory, it was Griffith's Livery. On the Sanborn Fire Map for 1886, it
was Griffith's Livery. In 1893, it was Padgett and Day's Livery. In 1906, it was
Swatts and Metsker Livery and Stable, and in 1912, Swatts. By the 1929 map, it was an
auto garage (Swatts was the first proprietor of that as well).
In Frank Swatts obituary, it says that he moved to Delphi in 1896 and opened a livery--but
that may not mean he took over at that exact date.
The photo archive's descriptions are sometimes not exactly correct.
