Dear Lindsey,
I may be able to help a little with our mutual GGrandfather John S. Davis. The 1860 census
record is a bit jumbled. The page of interest is Carroll County, Adams Township, page 165.
Unfortunately, the census recorder seems to have messed up the record pretty badly so it
requires some interpretation. He listed John Davis age 25 as the husband (instead of as
the son), Hennrietta (instead of Harriet) age 24 as the wife, and Hugh Prigett (instead of
Pritchard) as the 2 year old son. He may have had it right initially, but there seems to
have been an erasure. It is hard to guess why that happened. Maybe he didn't visit the
home and was relying on someone else's information.
Aunt Ida Stingley's bible indicated that Harriet Croushorn Pritchard died March 5,
1879 a few days after the birth of Harriet Elizabeth Pritchard on February 28, 1879. By
1880, I believe Hugh and most of the surviving children lived in Logansport (see census
for Cass County 4-WD; Logansport page 346) but his first name is listed as Luther. It
seems that the baby Harriet was adopted by a John Pritchard and his wife Asenath (sp?),
who may have been a brother or cousin of Hugh.
As far as the father of John Sylvester goes, I don't have any concrete information.
There was a John S. Davis who was married to a Martha Jane Smith in Delphi, Carroll County
on April 2, 1859. They were both in their early 20s and about the same age as Harriet. The
following year on May 21, 1860, Hugh and Harriet were married, also in Carroll County.
Since Harriet used her maiden name and not Davis on their marriage license, it is possible
that she was not married to the father. I suppose it is equally possible that she was
married, divorced or widowed, and then chose not to use the name Davis when she married
Hugh. Clearly, she named our John S. Davis after someone and he used that name throughout
his life. Possibly of interest, Martha and John S. Davis moved to Prairie Township in
White County in 1860, according to the census. Their relationships to our family, if any,
are unknown, but it does provide a number of possibilities.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Mike Davis
