Our local Amish are Old Order Amish, and we also have quite a few Mennonites. These, as
well as the Dunkards or German Baptists, all have an Anabaptist origin in Europe and have
the same basic customs and beliefs, except that they vary in how strict they are and how
much of the modern world they accept. The Mennonites are the least strict and most modern
in customs~ I have Mennonite friends who drive cars, and our local Amish are a little less
strict that the Amish in Millersburg, OH (Holmes County) or in Lancaster, PA.
The most common Amish names in our area are:
Miller, Yoder, Detweiler, Byler, Kaufman, Kaufmann, Hostetler, Hostetter, and Fisher. I
may have forgotten some.
Stoltz and Stoltzfus.
Before I retired I worked in the Blood Bank in the Lab at our local hospital, and there
were so many Millers in my file, that they had a drawer all to themselves! We were not
yet computerized, so all our files were in filing cabinets.
You can get a lot of information about the various Anabaptist descendants by putting
"Amish" or "Dunkard" in the Google search box.
Have fun! Gretchen
