While going through my bookshelves today, I discovered a book I did not realize I owned.
(I am guessing it was a part of my grandfather's collection.)
It is entitled: RECOLLECTIONS OF THE EARLY SETTLEMENT OF CARROLL COUNTY, INDIANA by Dr.
James Hervey Stewart, County Clerk for Twenty-five Consecutive Years. It was printed by
Hitchcock and Walden, for the Author. In Cincinnati in 1872.
The book appears to be a history of the County beginning with "...the 21st day of
December, 1824, Government land was purchased in the office at Crawfordsville, which
afterward formed the boundaries of Caroll County, Indiana."
Chapter Titles are:
"minutes" from old settler meetings
Recollections of Early Settlers
Great Fire of 1839
Churches (The Methodist Church, The Presbyterian Church, Church of Lebanon aka Old
School aka Deer-creek Church, Episcopal Church)
Letters from Eminent Men (gov't officials)
Biography of General Samuel Milroy
Departed Veterans (mini biographies)
a chapter regarding the incorporation of Delphi on Sept 15, 1835,
List of Carroll Circuit Court Judges 1828 - 1860,
Board of County Commissioners
Probate Court Notes
Benevolent Institutions (Masons, IOOF, F and AM
Official Votes of the County 1828 - 1860 (Voter's list included)
War Record of Carroll County (appears to include enrollments and deaths through 1865)
The book appears to be filled with names, notes, stories, biographies, etc. I am willing
to do look-ups for anyone who would be interested. You mail email directly at shirley_mcd
