When you get back into these time, it is difficult to "prove" anything. But you
can do a lot of reasoning by putting together information from census and other records.
That is, of course, not proof and so you have to be careful.
I have look at this family for quite awhile and I have a lot of circumstantial evidence
that I would be happy to provide for you. Marriage, census, birth records, property
records, etc.
For example, I know that both James and Benjamin were born in Kentucky or Virginia. I
know that Anne and Shadrack lived in Knox county, Kentucky, and in Franklin County,
Virginia. The 1810 Kentucky census shows that Anne and Shadrach have sons the correct age
as James and Benjamin. And I know that Anne, James, and Benjamin all showed up in Monroe
County at about the same time (along with many Brummett family members), about when the
territory was opened in 1816.
There is no record of the elder Shadrack being in Monroe county, but the 1820 census shows
Anne as the head of the household with an older male as a member of the household.
I know that there are business and legal relations between Shadrach Jr., James, Benjamin,
and the Brummetts.
James was also Justice of the Peace for a time in Nashville. He lists his birthplace in
Virginia. James marred Elizabeth Dover in 1931 but also appears in the 1820 census with a
different wife and household. So either there are two James Chandlers or else he
re-married.
Note that James and Elizabeth also have a son named Benjamin, more evidence of their
relationship. And they both probably have sons named Shadrach.
My gg-grandfather, Shadrach b. 1821, was an attorney in early Brown county, he attended
the state constitutional convention, he attended Indiana University as part of its first
class. He married Ursula Robertson owned land in Nashville. He is pretty well
documented.
Benjamin Chandler (like James) was a Justice of Peace in Nashville at the same time.
Remember that Nashville was only a wide spot in the road then.
But the earlier generations are not so well documented. I have many bits and pieces of
evidence for their lineage and travels, but no "smoking gun."
Greg
