Message Board Post:
Whitley County was created on January 17, 1818 from adjacent Knox County, Kentucky. The
1810 Knox County, Kentucky, census shows a single Chandler household, that of a senior
"Shadrick" Chandler:
- One son under the age of 10
- One son between the ages of 10 and 15,
- Two daughters between the ages of 10 and 15,
- One son between the ages of 16 and 24,
Shadrack Chandler senior and wife, both older than 45 years
I believe that the Shadrack Chandler who marriage Martha Pennington is the older son,
Benjamin is the middle son, and James is the youngest son.
And the daughters? Here are some possibilities:
- One of these daughter is probably the 10-26 year old female list in the Anne Chandler
household in the 1820 Monroe County, Indiana census.
- Agnes Chandler. There are records showing that an Agnes Chandler married a Daniel Cooley
on Apr. 16 1809 in Knox County, Kentucky. The Shadrack/Anne household is thought to be the
only Chandler household in Knox County at that time so Agnes was likely an older daughter
that did not appear in the 1810 Census because he had a household of her own at that time.
Agnes would have been named after her maternal grandmother, Agnes Brummett.
NOTES: (1) An Agnes chandler also shows up in Brown County, Indiana, married to a John W.
Stephens who is a native of Indiana. (2) The 1820 Monroe County, Indiana, census shows
females aged 10-26, 26-45, and and over 45. Assuming that Anne is the over 45 female,
could the 36-45 year old female be Agnes? (3) Note the connection to the Stephens,
Chandler and Brummett families. In addition to Moses and John W. Stephens, we have Banam
Brummet (sic) married to Eve Stephens and Betsy Ann Brummett married to Moses Stephens,
both in Knox County, Kentucky, and Henry Brummet married to Alcinda Stephens in Brown
County, Indiana. Could Agnes have re-married a related Stephens in Indiana? (5) Daniel
Cooley and Moses Stephens were a veterans of the War of 1812 from the state of Kentucky.
- Polly Chandler. A marriage of a Polly Chandler to Joseph Philphot on Aug. 20, 1820 in
Clay County has been recorded (1820 would be after Anne moved to Indiana). Clay County was
formed from Portions of Madison, Knox, and Floyd Counties in 1806. Little is known of this
Polly Chandler, but she is a candidate for a daughter of Shadrack Chandler.
I don't believe that the Chandlers in Orange Co., NC are related.
But the Benjamin Chandler that you mention married to Jane Falls in Franklin, Co. is
certainly related somehow. First, notice that the Benjamin name appears throughout the
line. The name Benjamin is almost non-existent, however, in the Chandlers of Virginia.
But is is common form the families from Maryland and New England.
I suspect that the marriage to Janes Falls is a second marriage. Court records showed
that a Benjamin Chandler had adolescent children in 1790 (possibly Shadrach).
According to Virginia Genealogy, p. 28: "To receive a license, persons had to give
bond with sufficienty security (usually $150) that there was no lawful reason why the
marriage couldn't take place. The bondsman was usually a family member related to
either the bride or the groom." (quoted by Dr. H. Thomas Chandler).
Interestingly, other records show that the person providing surety for the marriage of
Benjamin Chandler and Jane Fallis was none other than James Brummett, presumably the same
James Brummett who is the father (or brother) of Anne Brummett who married Shadrack
Chandler in Franklin County, Virginia, in 1789. That is very strong evidence for a close
family relationship with Benjamin Chandler.
