The Neal Family of Salem
An English boy by the name of Neal, given name unknown, was induced by the
captain of a ship to watch some stores on the ship for him. The boy fell
asleep and on awakening, found the ship was under sail for America. On
reaching manhood, this boy married and about 1752, had a son named Jacob.
Jacob Neal was a Revolutionary War soldier, having taught school and having
married Nancy Yemmons, he moved from South Carolina to Bourbon County,
Kentucky. This couple had four sons, Samuel, James, Joseph and John. Nancy
Neal the wife and mother, having died in Kentucky, Jacob Neal moved to
Sangamon County, Illinois where he died.
Samuel Neal, son of Jacob Neal and Nancy Yemmons served in the war of
1812-15. Marrying Sarah Ann Scott, eight years his junior, who died
September 1, 1813 near Maysville, Kentucky. Samuel remarried and moved to
Washington County, Indiana 1819, locating about five miles east of Salem.
He died in Monroe County, Indiana at the age of 69 years in the year 1847.
James Harrison Neal, third son of Samuel and Sarah Ann Scott Neal was born
near Maysville, Kentucky, October 1, 1812. He was married to Abigail Heaton
January 7, 1834 at Salem, Indiana. To this couple were born George
LaFayette, June 5, 1835; Sarah Ellen, May 14, 1838; Mary Ann, August 16,
1840; Caroline Abigail, March 4, 1843; and James Burr, March 28, 1846. The
last named James Burr Neal was born in Greenville, Indiana where his father
was a harness dealer. He married Alice Trueblood, daughter of Caleb and
Rhoda Stanley Trueblood to which union were born Walter Guy, Mabel, and
Ellen. Guy as he was familiarly known married Minnie Berkey, daughter of
Jonas W. and Amanda Bonner (can't make out the spelling) Berkey and died
February 21, 1934, leaving the widow and son Frank Berkey Neal. Mabel
married John Osborn and died March 1, 1928, Ellen married Louis H.
Williamson; Frank B. Neal married Frances Coombs, daughter of Frank and
Grace Murphy Coombs.
