I have emailed and/or contacted House Reps., Mike Pence, Todd Young, Marlin
Stutzman, Todd Rokita, Dan Burton. Some of their websites will only accept
'email from constituents with zip codes in their districts. Others you
have to snail mail.
The initial hearing last week, was heavily biased, misleading, and limited
to only invited testimony. Those invited did not include any genealogy
professionals, and was focused solely on 'emotional testimony' from a
father whose deceased child had her ssn stolen; although there is no
specific evidence to indicate WHERE the identity thieves got the number.
It was a big topic at Roots Tech in SLC this past week. Even the heavy
hitters in genealogy are being purposely ignored.
When fraud becomes MORE rampant, because forensic genealogists, banks,
credit bureaus, and businesses, cannot check to see if a social security
number is valid, or genuinely belongs to a deceased person, then the laws
will change. There will have to be some sort of access, because the
banking industry cannot operate without it.
And if, Social Security Administration thinks the SSA-5 requests are
too numerous now, just wait, those requests will explode if we cannot make
a simple check of the data as we do now. (Can you believe that was
actually part of his testimony, we request too many actual copies of the SS
Applications, last I checked we PAID for them too; and the way he said
"genealogists" made us sound like third class citizens!)
This is going to be a tragic loss of vital record information, and I see
challenges to the Freedom of Information Act, if this passes.

FYI! This affects us all!
As many of you aware, the House is considering legislation to greatly limit
our access to SSDI information. Below is a Call to Action link for those
that are interested:
