DIED IN CHICAGO
Former Brown County Citizen's Death a Result of Surgical Operation-Burial
Tuesday
Joseph A. Downey, a highly respected and well known citizen and an able
school teacher who formerly resided about eight miles east of Nashville,
died in Wesley Hospital in Chicago last Sunday night.
About one year ago Mr. Downey purchased a farm in Jasper County and moved
his family to that place.
A few weeks ago he became ill and was taken to the Wesley Hospital for
treatment. A surgical operation for abscess of the liver became necessary,
and he withstood the operation nicely, and for a time it was thought his
recovery was assured, but fate had decreed otherwise. His condition grew
alarming at an early hour Sunday morning, and at ten o'clock that evening he
passed to the great beyond.
Deceased was a son of Ephriam Downey, one of Brown County's most
substantial and esteemed citizens. He was 40 years of age and leaves a wife
and three children.
Mr. Downey's death is the first to occur in the family of twelve children,
the youngest of which is 30 years. Both parents are living and in good
health.
The remains were shipped to Helmsburg, arriving Monday night, brought to
Nashville, and Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock impressive funeral services
were conducted at the M. E. Church, Rev. Maynard of Jackson County having
charge and assisted by Rev. F. C. Bailey and Rev. M. C. Currens. The
services of the New Bellsville Tribe of Red Men, of which deceased was a
member, were very solemn and impressive.
The remains were then conveyed to Greenlawn Cemetery where, after the
ritualistic services by the I. O. R. M., the body was consigned to its final
resting place.
