Randi - Thank you so much for posting these newspaper articles about Brown
County families, I have found several of the pre-1914
articles very helpful. This one about the Poling's in Needmore is quite
interesting.

Elkhart (IN) Daily Review, October 28, 1908, p. 1.
Nashville, Indiana, Oct. 28-The farm home of John Poling one half mile
south
of Needmore was destroyed by fire. The house was a new one, completed only
a few days ago, and stood near his old house, recently vacated. Both
buildings and their entire contents were destroyed with a total loss of
$3,700. Ernest Dunigan, a young man who had been making his home with
Poling, occupied a room on the second floor, and Poling's bedroom was on
the
first floor. Dunigan awoke almost strangled with smoke. Hurrying
downstairs, he aroused Poling who is 80 years old.
About this time the roof fell in and the old man was covered with fire. As
he started to run out of the house, the door fell and almost severed his
left arm. He fell in a faint and during the excitement was unnoticed for a
short time. Dunigan finally saw the old man and, jumping into the fire, he
dragged him into the yard. Dunigan thought that Poling was dead, and for a
while paid no attention to him. Later he noticed the injured man moving
and
Dunigan, in his night clothes, hurried across a field to a telephone where
he called Dr. Prather. Poling was revived by hard work.
Poling had insurance of $800 but had made preparations to go to
Martinsville
and have the amount increased. He has been a widower for several years and
is the father of several grown children. Although 80 years old, he had
decided to marry, and it was with this intention that he had built the new
house. His children had objected to this, but the old man was determined
to
carry out his matrimonial plan. Since the house burned, however, he has
changed his mind and will spend the remainder of his life with his
children.
