Dear NascarfanN,
Thanks for all of the good information on Bales and Brownfield marriages and
families. I am sure that some of it is for the people I am trying to find.
I need to check further but I think the Elizabeth Bales who married John D.
Rhynard is tied in somehow. My mother remembers hearing the story of
"Granny Brownfield" taking care of a small child, possibly her
granddaughter. The child's father (and I think I remember the name Rhynard)
came to the house and asked for a dipper of water. While the grandmother
was getting it, he took the young child and went off across a field with
her. I think the gist of the story was that the two parents were estranged
and their child was staying with Granny Brownfield. I will have to dig
through my "story notes" to see if I have remembered this correctly and to
see if I can figure out just who these people were.
Hmmmm - I just checked my story notes and now I have an interesting
situation. I remembered the gist of the story correctly and a man named
Rhynard (or Reynard/Reinard) was involved. But the grandmother was Sarah
Knight who married William Bales (son of Perry and Catherine Waggamon
Bales). Their daughter Mary E. (called Molly) married a William Rhynard and
they had a girl named Alma and then were separated or divorced while she was
still very young. On a Sunday morning, everyone had gone to church except
Granny Bales and Alma. William Rhynard came to the house and asked to hold
the baby and than asked for a drink of fresh water. Granny Bales went to
the well to pump the water and when she returned, he and the child were
gone. She could see him in the distance walking across a field. That was
the last time the child or her father were seen by any of the family and
Molly died shortly thereafter.
Of course, this is a passed-down family story and could be very far from the
truth. But with allied family namrs involved and the not-so-common name of
Rhynard, I am wondering if John Rhynard and William Rhynard (even with
variant spellings) could be related? More research to do!!!
I do appreciate your help. You sent me a lot of great leads. By the way, I
live in Charlotte NC -- heart of NASCAR!
Connie

I found the same two marriages for Elizabeth Bales as Karen. I also found a
marriage for a Mary Elizabeth Bales to John D. Rhynard in Brown co. IN 1 Jul
1891. Not sure if this is the same Elizabeth Bales.
This may be parents of Elizabeth. I found in Monroe Co. IN Salt Creek Twp.
PO Bloomington the family of Perry and Catharine Bales. Perry b. IN,
Catharine b. KY. All children were born in Indiana. They were there in 1850
and 1860. In 1870 they were in Edgar Co. IL, Young America Twp. (The
Elizabeth in this family was born abt. 1848, so may not be the same person.
I thought it was worth mentioning since Elizabeth named her son Perry.)
I found a marriage in my Indiana Marriage Index for Miranda Brownfield to
Alexander Young 8 Dec 1886 in Monroe Co. IN. She was listed as daughter of
John Brownfield and Elizabeth Bales. Her birth date was 8 Dec 1877. It is
possible that Elizabeth was considered her mother if her birth mother had
died.
I found a marriage in my IN Marriage Index for Eliza Bales and Silas Smith
16 Sept 1856 in Monroe Co. IN. There was also one for Eliza Bales and Jacob
Thacker 6 Dec. 1901 in Monroe Co. IN. (Not sure if these are Elizabeth.)
I also found a marriage in my IN Marriage Index for Perry Brownfield to Mary
A. Scroghon 30 Jul 1906. (These indexes have a lot of misspellings.) This
may be your Perry.
I found 3 births to Perry Brownfield and Mary Scrogham. (Name spelled 3
different ways. All in Monroe Co. IN.
