I have a real mystery on my hands, and I am working together with
Richard Smith to try to solve it. Both my husband and Richard's wife
are descended from Sarah Hoke and Henry Hovis, who lived in Brown
County, Indiana and who are both buried there in Grandview Cemetery.
Our problem is we have wrong parents for Sarah Hoke.
Sarah was born about 1813 in Pennsylvania (probably York County) and she
married Henry Hovis about 1830, as their first child, Elizabeth, was
born 1 Aug 1831 in Ohio (probably Richland County). Henry and Sarah
Hovis (and family) moved to Brown Co., IN sometime around 1847.
It has been stated that Sarah's parents were Hugh Hogue and Mary
Patterson, but I recently traced their daughter, Sarah (born about the
same time as my Sarah Hoke and possibly in the same county and state),
and their daughter is definitely not my Sarah (who married Henry
Hovis). Hugh Hogue and Mary Patterson's daughter, Sarah, married
Cassamer Wittig and they eventually moved to Lycoming Co., PA where
Sarah died and where Cassamer and their children continued to live.
So, now I'm back to square one trying to determine who my husband's
Sarah Hoke's parents actually were. Is there anyone else researching
this line that can give us some help? Also, how do I go about obtaining
an obituary for Sarah (Hoke) Hovis in Brown Co., IN? She died May 28,
1908 according to her tombstone.
Thanks for your help!
