Surname: Brummett, Richardson, Stephens
-------------------------
According to research of Mabel Harp and Anna Stanger published in 1989,
Nancy Jane Brummett (25 Jan 1836 Brown Co-27 Apr 1896) married Benjamin
B. Stephens 2 Apr 1857. Stephens is a family long associated with the Brummets
with a number of intermarriages. Nancy Jane was the eldest daughter of
William "Whispering Billy" Brummett and Margaret Jane Richardson, who m.
15 Dec 1831. Margaret Jane d. 1876 and William remarried. William was called
"Whispering Billy" because he had a very loud voice. He was the son of
George "Grancer" Brummett and was b. about 1809-11 and d. about 1898. George
is believed to have been the son of James & Agnes Brummet, but there is
no proof. George's wife is unknown, and was NOT Mary French as is often
asserted; she married a different George Brummett. Margaret Jane Richardson
is said to have been the daughter of Thomas Richardson and Nancy Quesenbery.
I don't have anything further on them. There is family lore that George's
brother married a part-Cherokee woman and that a son of that brother had
Indian friends. Hadn't heard anything like that about this line, though.
Connection with the southern Indian tribes could have occurred when the
Brummetts lived in Tennessee or Virginia. The 1880 census shows my widowed
GGgrandmother, Esther Brummet, living with William & his family.
