Surname: FLEETWOOD, CROSLOW, PURTLEBAUGH, COMBS, HENDERSON
-------------------------
Here is the information I have on the Fleetwood Family of Brown County.
These are my husband's ancestors. I hope it is useful.
FLEETWOOD FAMILY
Isaac Fleetwood was born in 1743 in a Virginia Colony. He died Oct. 3,
1832 in Monroe or Lawrence County, Indiana. He is buried in the Pleasent
Run Cemetery in Lawrence County. He served in the Revolutionary War in
the 11th Virginia Regiment and fought under George Washington in the Battles
of Brandywine and Whitemarsh. While in the war, he also served as the Captain's
cook on the ship"Dragon" in the Virginia Navy. He was discharged at Valley
Forge in 1780. His father was Jacob Fleetwood.
Isaac married Sarah Ryder on Feb.3, 1790 in Loudoun County, Virginia. She
was born about 1770 in Virginia or Kentucky. She died sometime after the
1850 Census. Her mother's maiden name was Ingram. Isaac and Sarah migrated
to Floyd County, Kentucky around 1794, and by 1826, they were in Jackson
County, Indiana. Ancestor is their fifth child, Solomon Fleetwood.
Solomon Fleetwood. was born in 1805 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He died
in 1851 at the age of 46.. On Oct. 26, 1826 in Bedford, Lawrence County,
Indiana, he married Sally (Fannie) Todd
(1810-1896). the marriage was Oct. 26, 1826 in Lawrence County, Indiana.
She may have been related to Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of President Abraham
Lincoln. She was the daughter of James Todd and Elizabeth Meagel.
In 1851, Solomon Fleetwood and his brother, Thomas, went rafting down the
White River, probably in Lawrence County. They took with them three brothers-
in- law, James, William and George Todd. All five men were drowned. A terrible
tragedy for the Fleetwood and Todd families.
Ancestor is Solomon and Fannie's son, John Earl Fleetwood. He was born
around 1840 in Indiana, probably Lawrence County. He died at the age of
82 on Dec. 24, 1922 in Maumee, Jackson County, Indiana. and is buried in
the Elkinsville Cemetery in Brown County, Indiana. He served with the Union
Army in the Civil War ( Ind.Regiment Volunteers 28, Co. C) and he carried
the mail between Nashville and Elkinsville, Indiana. He married Mary Jane
Combs on July 7, 1860. She was born in 1841 and died at the age of 80 in
1921 on Jan. 22rd. She is buried in Elkinsville Cemetery. Mary Jane's parents
were William Combs and Lucinda Sipes. Helen Purtlebaugh Arthur, a great
grandaughter, listed Mary Janes' parents as Jonas Combs and Mary Henderson.
Perhapes one couple are parents and the other, grandparents. More research
is needed here. This Fleetwood line did marry into a Henderson family in
Lawrence and Brown Counties several times.
Ancestor is John and Mary's son, Willard Fleetwood. Willard was born August
8, 1870 in Brown County, Indiana. He died December 9, 1953 in Columbus,
Indiana. He is buried in the Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus. In 1890,
he married Tina Bales. Very little is known about Tina. We do know that
in 1890, Willard and Tina went to Colorado by covered wagon. At some point
soon after, they migrated on to Kansas where they homesteaded for about
five years. In 1895, Tina became very ill and Willard took up his family
and migrated back to Indiana, again by covered wagon. It is not known if
Tina died in Kansas or came back to Indiana with her family. I do know
that she was dead by 1899, four years later. Willard and Tina had three
children
*Roy E. Fleetwood, who married Ella Wills
*Letha Jane Fleetwood, who married Jesse A. Purtlebaugh ( ancestors)
*Lucy Ann Fleetwood, who married William Richardson.
On Jan 1, 1899, Willard Fleetwood took a second wife. She was Mary Ann
Curry. They lived in Brown County, Indiana. Willard and Mary Ann had three
children I know of:
*Alma May Fleetwood, who married Price Brown
*Carrie Maria Fleetwood, who married John William Henderson
*Helen Fleetwood, who married William Bryan George.
Letha Jane Fleetwood, ancestor and the second child of Willard Fleetwood
and Tina Bales, was born April 8, 1892 in Kansas. She would have been around
three when her family returned in Indiana in a covered wagon, but she claims
to have remembered the trip. Letha died on Aug. 25, 1974 in Monroe County,
Indiana and is buried in the Duncan Cemetery in Brown County, Indiana.
She married Jesse Andrew Purtlebaugh on March 3, 1911 in Brown County,
Indiana. Jesse was born in 1890 and died in 1941. He was the son of Elias
Purtlebaugh and Amanda J. Greenlee. Elias Purtlebaugh was the son of George
Purtlebaugh and Mary Smith Conger. George was the son of Daniel Purtlebaugh
and Eliza Mahew. Daniel was the son of George Purtlebaugh, a German immigrant,
and Helena Laura, last name unknown.
Letha Fleetwood and Jesse Purtlebaugh were the parents of Helen Mae Purtlebaugh
(1916-1996), who married Marion Arthur (1899-1969)
