Just a note to say that, although this group hasn't been much help, I think
you guys are the greatest thing since sliced bread. For more than 30 years,
genealogists researching my surname, SUTLIVE, have been beating their heads
against the brick wall that is Joseph Sutlive, my great, great, great, great
grandfather. We know he lived most of his adult life in Old Rowan County,
Rowan, Forsyth, Davidson, Stokes, and died in Stokes County in 1824. We know
his children well, or at least the two sons who apparently sired the entire
line of Sutlives who yet remain, but know nothing about his past. We don't
know where or when he was born, when or to whom he was married, or even where
he is buried. I logged on to this site in hopes of finding some of that, to
no avail. Yet as I read the postings from others who had ancestors who
without a single doubt were the friends and neighbors of Joseph Sutlive, my
heart is warmed by a strange sense of comradarie. We don't know each other,
but by all that is holy, we are as American as any human being can ever be.
We have no knowledge of the "immigrant experience" but I for one feel no loss
from that fact. I would, instead, feel lost of my ancestors had of come
through Ellis Island. I am an employee of the United States Immigration and
Naturalization Service. It makes me feel good to know my ancestors were on
this continent more than 100 years before that agency ever existed.
